Since slave labor built the southern farms, let the South give them land.
My grandfather had to hire help. He was from the North, where owning people is abhorrent.
Great solution. /s
How about they go F themselves instead?...
You are quite ignorant, but I’m sure that it’s not your fault. My 3d great grandfather owned thousands of acres of land and slaves. The slaves were freed and the land was given to former slaves, many of them not his former property. The former slaves of my GGG Grandfather ended up with nothing as did my ancestors. Those who got the land were the carpetbaggers, their friends, and the other who were in political power. Those Blacks who were granted land by the Freedmen’s Bureau were later cheated out of that land and became tenant farmers with little to show for it. It sucks to be the losers. Were your family one of the winners? It’s good to be a winner, and profitable.
Hey go eff yourself prick
I’m from the south and I can’t afford land... much less any to give away. And, I’ve never owned a slave, either.
Dis you know that the Emancipation Proclamation only freed Southern slaves?
Did you know that the last slaves were freed in New Jersey AFTER the war?
What a joke.
Barb....
There is no “us” and “them”. Only Americans. (Sure, that’s a tough sell layely) The civil war is over and every soldier, Confederate or Union are inarguably Americans.
So you suggest “they” pay, you really mean your fellow Americans pay to appease nonsense from other Americans, and thats ok with you as long as you dont pay for someone’s past sins.
You should change your mind.
Ever hear about sharecroppers? Most white farmers in the south before and after the Civil War were not property owners and did not own slaves.
There were also blacks that were sharecroppers both before and after. Neither group were treated that great by the property owners.
Usually half of the crops or profits went to the owners. Plus most had to rent the equipment and supplies used from the Plantation store, with interest of course.
Also the vast majority of white farmers that did own property usually could not afford to own slaves. That is why many of them had lots of kids.
There were plenty of slaves in the North. Dont kid yourself. Not all of them were black either.
Most Southerners that were farmers before the war were not slave owners. They and their family worked the land and used hired help if they needed it, just like up North.
That's BS. There were plenty of slaves in the North. Not just on farms, but in the textile industry and in the home.
What kind of uppity, ignorant post is that???
My grandfather, in the South, hired hands and guess what....he PAID them, out of his own pocket.
When times were tough he still paid them....black, white, hispanic (in later years)...it didn’t matter. They were paid to keep food on their tables.
In which state was your grandfather a farmer?
Abhorrent? Are you aware that when Northern states abolished slavery they granted a "grace period" in which slaveholders could sell their slaves south before manumission took effect, thereby recouping their investments? Get off your high horse.
