White People Own 98 Percent of Rural Land. Young Black Farmers Want to Reclaim Their Share.

Innovations by Black farmers remain at the core of sustainable agriculture today.

Black people have largely been expelled from the US agricultural landscape. In 1920, nearly a million Black farmers worked on 41.4 million acres of land, making up a seventh of farm owners. Today, only about 49,000 of them remain, making up just 1.4 percent of the nation’s farm owners, and tending a scant 4.7 million acres—a nearly 90 percent loss.

This didn’t happen by accident. Since Emancipation, Black farmers have had to fight for a share of this country’s fertile ground, due to a history of racist policies and land theft. But modern sustainable agriculture owes much to Black agriculturalists, explained Leah Penniman, co-director of Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York and author of Farming While Black, on a recent episode of Bite.

The Industrial Revolution “kicked off” 150 years prior.

Farm mechanization was kicking off in the 20s with the advent of large gasoline tractors and much improved and larger implements.

If they want land, they can start by taking millions of acres of Montana land away from Hollywood celebrities and from Ted Turner.

Good catch! I missed that. Typical devious, manipulative and deceitful leftist writing to push a narrative.

The 40 acres and a mule thing was a promise made by General Sherman during the Civil War. Blacks never got what was promised. President Andrew Johnson reversed Sherman’s order, giving the land back to its former Confederate owners.

The Pigford settlements were not enough so now it’s onto land confiscation.

Dis you know that the Emancipation Proclamation only freed Southern slaves?
Did you know that the last slaves were freed in New Jersey AFTER the war?
What a joke.

I guess the vegan never heard of the food chain. Years ago Rush spent some time talking about a stupid vegan who was turning his dog into a vegetarian. Rush pointed out that the only reason a dog would mostly purposely eat vegetables would be to make itself vomit because it’s sick. He added that the dog might be OK but it’s not the best diet for it. Not so with felines. A cat needs a protein that can only be found in meat. If it doesn’t get that protein it will die.

The Pigford Settlement gave a check to any black man that picked up a ho.

I'm guessing that's quite a few of them.

You can't reclaim a share of something you don't own, you can only steal it. I'm sure that all the Union soldiers whose families lost fathers, and brothers would like to reclaim what they lost in fighting the Confederacy in the civil war. No matter what you attribute as the cause of the war there is no possible argument against the result.....the freedom of all Blacks in America.

In the almost 150 years since the end of the civil war there is no excuse today for Blacks who don't educate and improve their lives...............except for their continued dependence on the democrat party. The opportunities for Blacks are out there and until recently with the democrats turn to Hispanics the advantages for Blacks in college admissions and jobs has been heavily weighed in their direction.

Why is that Asians coming from war ravaged and economically poor countries are able to do so well with a generation or two(better than many Whites in America too) or the Africans (let's exclude the Somolis) that immigrate now who work hard to educate themselves and advance..........and both groups as a whole really want to integrate as Americans. But for a large number, most, Blacks born here they expect and demand that they be given whatever the hell they want and be able to rampage, beat and even kill people because................... over 150 years ago, maybe, some distant relation was a slave owned by distant relatives of the tiniest percentage of the current "White" population of America. And yet not a one of these, righteously indignant(okay that was bullshit), not one of these gibbering anarchists has demanded a damn thing of the family of the first slave owner in America, The Black man who started it all Anthony Johnson born 1600 in Angola.

Barb....

There is no “us” and “them”. Only Americans. (Sure, that’s a tough sell layely) The civil war is over and every soldier, Confederate or Union are inarguably Americans.

So you suggest “they” pay, you really mean your fellow Americans pay to appease nonsense from other Americans, and thats ok with you as long as you dont pay for someone’s past sins.

You should change your mind.

Ever hear about sharecroppers? Most white farmers in the south before and after the Civil War were not property owners and did not own slaves.

There were also blacks that were sharecroppers both before and after. Neither group were treated that great by the property owners.

Usually half of the crops or profits went to the owners. Plus most had to rent the equipment and supplies used from the Plantation store, with interest of course.

Upstate New York has farm land for the asking. All they have to do is go buy some and set up shop.. Amish have been doing it for years, but then they don’t waste their time whining and “protesting.”

Also the vast majority of white farmers that did own property usually could not afford to own slaves. That is why many of them had lots of kids.

There were plenty of slaves in the North. Don’t kid yourself. Not all of them were black either.

The article compares 1920 with today. There was a major Depression in between that made a lot of people lose their land, probably hit Blacks the worst. It was nobody’s fault, not “racist.” But should not be ignored.

Most Southerners that were farmers before the war were not slave owners. They and their family worked the land and used hired help if they needed it, just like up North.

You thought wrong. The forty acres and a mule was just a campaign slogan. Never happened.
