A Victorian-obsessed graduate has snubbed the 9-5 life to pursue her dream of living like a 19th century duchess in a country mansion. Jacqueline Brown, 25, from St. Louis City, Missouri always thought she'd take an office job after university, but decided to pursue her passion for the Victorian era after coming across the opportunity to be the live-in caretaker of a 19th century manor house. The graphic design graduate, who estimates she has spent over $5,000 on period clothing in the last three years, wiles away her days showing guests around the 1853-built Oakland House and tending to the property's upkeep.

A lot of the roads were probably not too great either, which would make for a bumpy, unpleasant ride.

The Victorian age started in 1837, so if she was a young woman living in the American South and had no avenue to move away, she would have had to live through the Civil War and/or its aftermath. Not too pleasant for anybody.

Good points. Paved roads were rare until the Model T started selling in big numbers.

This is what a Wisconsin carriage ride was like in 1898 after a rainstorm.

Not to mention no cushy four-ply toilet tissue for a nice clean derrière.

That’s why “real” ladies were so tiny; they didn’t dare eat anything, so they wouldn’t have to poop. Plus the corsets they wore were so tight, they could hardly breathe (thus the constant fainting spells), let alone pass gas. All of which, including your comment, is why they had to have a maid. Who else was going to take used personal cleaning cloths to the wash house, and clean the chamber pots? No wonder their big houses were built with a front AND back staircase! P.U.!
And when I think of what the PIONEER women had to do without! What brave, stalwart women they were, leaving their maids behind; and without even a Sears and Roebuck catalogue for hygiene.
