I concur with you on the.30-06. I had a really great Mauser with a Leupold scope that I lost in a boating accident.
Dont really want to start a debate here, but have you ever shot a Mossburg 12 ga. Sluggster with a slug or double ought buck? You will not want to pull the trigger again! After careful consideration, I believe a 20 gauge double barrel coach gun will do the job in the house with Short range fields of fire. And you will not hesitate to reload and shoot as many times as necessary.. just my two cents.
My suggestion for a 5-gun battery:
1. .22 LR bolt action rifle with a 20 or 22 inch barrel (quieter). Puts small game in the pot or pan.
2. 9mm full size or compact semi-auto pistol. Self defense.
3. .308 Winchester rifle with decent glass. Larger game for the grill and self defense at a distance.
4. 12 gauge shotgun. Pump or recoil/blowback semiauto. Gas guns are nice but take extra care. Game and self-defense.
5. AR15 M4 type with red dot or 4x fixed scope, .223/5.56mm. Self defense against herds. A min-14 is an option, but for parts availably, go with the AR.
Roughly the same distance here; use a Rem 700 with Nightforce scope during daylight. AR-10 with a pulsar thermion xp50 at night.
I’m looking to replace the ones I had with three or four that compliment each other.

Have you tried scuba diving yet?
Yeah, I would have liked a carbine, or ‘tanker’ variant, but there’s dozens of other variants out there (The Finns accounted for about 20 alone), and they’re still in use in the Middle East, Africa, and former Eastern Bloc countries. When I bought mine, it was a one-size-fits-all Russian version from WW II. It was (and still is) a solid bolt action rifle.
Ive got a typical suburban home, so 130 ft from the front of my house to the curb. But since they wont be coming here on foot, Im thinking about my 13.5 LMT MWS 308 if theyre still in their car.
Mag Fed Shotgun with plenty of 12 round mags- There are few better deterrents on the planet than this.
PS90 - 50 round mags with a devastating caliber (with the correct ammo)
Pistol of choice. Probably best to own several, as a subcompact such as an LCP is not as ideal as a Glock 19. A Glock 19 is a MUST HAVE with spare 33 round magazines. Also look at the FNX45 Tactical. Large but a great gun, especially with a suppressor.
AR-15 with plenty of spare mags.
Suppressors for pistol, rifle and rimfire.
.22 for practice.
That is what I consider necessary. I have left out a 1911 and a CZ75 simply because the nature of today’s necessitates something more “tactical” in nature. 7 or 7 rounds will simply not cut it.
Yep....come to think of it.
All I can say is I know what a .22LR CCI Velocitor (Gold Dot HP) does to varmints around here. IF it does to a human what it does to them, it’d be a pretty nasty wound.
Buy em cheap and stack em deep.
Why are people surprised when prices skyrocket during events like this?
Forgot to add. The PS90 (P90 actually) is used by the Secret Service to protect the President of the United States. That alone says something about that gun and caliber.....yet it is rarely mentioned in threads like this.
(and the Queen of England is protected by the pistol variant, the FiveseveN)
Something to consider.
LOL!
The most common ones from 6 months ago are the ones sold out today.
You need a Shotgun, pistol and a good rifle.
The Shotgun does not have to be fancy. I would suggest a 45 Hand held and a M4 rifle.
Forgot to add, probably best to add a reloader to the list. I have dies for calibers I do not even own **just in case**.
Worst case scenario, they can be used as barter.
Yes - my Savage 308 gets me to 1000 (with the right ammo), and 500 is very doable with a 308. Actually, for target shooting, an AR-15 can do 500 too.
My thoughts on the original subject - if you intend to use the guns in possible times of unrest, I’d go with common calibers. 9 mm, 357 mag/38 spl, 40 cal, 45 ACP, 223/5.56, 308, 12 gauge shotgun.
If you want to reach out much longer, and don’t mind the cost, 50 BMG bolt action guns will do the trick, but you mentioned 500 yards and the 50 isn’t necessary for that, unless you’re looking to disable vehicles.
Good advice. I have a RRA lower with match trigger and adjustable buttstock. Either my light weight 16” upper with an Aimpoint red dot with removable night vision behind it that can also be swung out of the sight line or a 20” medium weight match barrel with 4-12 power scope can be used. Both have rail gas blocks so iron sights could be fitted.
Not to my taste, thanks. Plus I want to match ammo with a PCC.
My requirement, experiences and opinions, of course differ.
You might want to rethink that. I have an AK pistol and I consider it a toy, because I can't hit squat with it and it is very, very VERY loud. How loud you ask? The first time I fired it (outside) my first thought was how did I forget my hearing protection. I did not forget my hearing protection, the AK pistol just overwhelmed my hearing protection. It is louder than my 44 magnum pistol. I cannot imagine shooting it inside the house.
When I shoot it now, I wear foam plugs and then put on my Mickey Mouse ears.
