Oregon State and Oregon announced Friday that they no longer will use the term Civil War in connection with their sports rivalry games.
The annual football game between the Ducks and Beavers has been referred to as the Civil War for nearly 90 years. More recently, games in other sports involving the two schools also have been called the same term.
In a statement released by OSU, president Ed Ray said the universities agreed to drop the name as it has a connection to a war fought to preserve slavery.
............ (N)umerous athletes, alums and boosters have questioned the term Civil War in relation to the rivalry. Fridays announcement came after several meetings with OSUs student athlete advisory committee regarding the term Civil War.
Barnes said there will be a process between Oregon and Oregon State to consider another moniker for the rivalry. The OSU-Oregon football series began in 1894. Last November marked the 123rd game between the Ducks and Beavers, the fifth-most contested series among FBS schools. Oregon State and Oregon have played 354 mens basketball games, the most of any NCAA series.

As a Veteran who served during the cold war, and who has lost friends in the Middle East, I really get ticked when sports casters use the term “war” or “battle” do describe a GAME.
Anyone being shot dead? No.
Yes there may be the occasional injury that is career ending but I dont recall a whole lot of amputations or loss of sight or hearing.
If you get bored with it, you can eat the candy.
How about a service that will expunge a person’s name from ever having attended a particular school, such as Oregon?

The University of Oregon is Located in Lane county, named after Joseph Lane, John Breckenridge’s VP running mate (the Southern Democratic Ticket of 1860). Burn it down.
