Should Local Sheriffs Deputize the Citizenry in Times of Civil Unrest?
Self | 6/23/2020 | Self

Given increasing incidents of vandalism and violence in our country, it seems prudent that the common people, who have an interest in maintaining the peace and keeping order, exercise the authority to guard and protect lives and property beyond their own homes, and do so in conjunction with higher levels of enforcement.

To that end, I would suggest exploring the possibility of having local sheriffs vet and deputize able citizens, so that they may act in support of law enforcement more tangibly. That is to say, authorize them to stand guard in places where vandals are more inclined to wreak havoc, such as cemeteries and statues, and other public landmarks that trigger the left of late.

They need not be armed with lethal force, but they need be diligent to witness, record, and report as needed. If allowed, some non-lethal deterrents such as sounds (classical music) or pepper spray may also be of help.

I would very much like to see a groundswell when it comes to confronting civil unrest and supporting proper law enforcement. Moreover I am convinced the population of “normals” in our midst is more than adequate to the task.

What do you think? How can we do this? What are the practical implications? Is it even legal?

My husband and I recently moved from a small town in a red state to a blue city in the same state.

I would trust the small town sheriff. I would not trust the police commissioner of this city.

Most people do not know the difference between the Sheriff and the local police. One in the same right? Nope...

Sheriffs are elected and not selected. Sheriffs try to stick as close as possible to the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. While many local police do not.

Here are a couple good links.

My answer is yes, but don’t expect it in blue urban areas. Those willing and capable are spineless wet noodles hiding under their tables. In more rural, red areas there would be greater support and willingness, even though population is less.

Pretty good summation of the philosophical reasoning behind lawful citizen resistance to threats.

This statement by you is key: “now may be the perfect time for Real Americans to forge a partnership with their Sheriff’s office.”

Creating a partnership now makes lawful force against threats pro-active instead of reactive. It prepares the hammer and anvil to pound enemies into submission.

The only matter missing in your summation is working with your state guard, if you have one. Twenty-six states have a state guard that is separate from the state national guard and cannot be federalized.

Thank you. Was more thinking of being a local as possible to ensure fast response. Also forgot to mention that in most cases, if a Sheriff from County A deputizes civilians, and Sheriff B requests assistance from Sheriff A, that Sheriff may be able to use deputizes civilians from County A.

Think about that if/when the need comes for a large, reactionary force. They, like ordinary law enforcement, could be called in from several jurisdictions.

Oh and one other note to help folks:

Was out to dinner last night with friends. One never wanted to talk politics, and in this case wanted me to keep my voice down so as not be overheard and judged as ‘fill-in-the-blank’ . I and her husband did not care. We spoke I mind and opinion about what is going on in American these days where others could here us...

... and we heard NO disagreements.
