I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God. First grade.
First morning.
I stood, covered my heart with my right hand and said,
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,
And to the Republic for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
indivisible,
with Liberty and Justice for all.”
I took my “pledge” when I was 5 years old.
Been holding it ever since.
