Surgical masks are quite similar to a multi-layered cloth mask (surgical masks are certainly not n95 rated by any stretch of the imagination). There are sources for n95 cloth material and other filter material that can be placed into the cloth masks (mine all have pockets for filter material). It looks like about a 3.4% reduction of virus transmitting particles of numerous sizes is seen in the studies that have been done that I am able to find with a quick search. I'm still looking for the one that talks about in home setting and a roughly 10-20% reduction in transmission from an infected individual (familial caregivers not getting sick while caring for an infectious family member).

Take a look at a coughed-out virus through an electron microscope. You’ll see all kinds of goop (technical term) surrounding it. Most aerosol pathogens are going to be like that. Something that isn’t would be airborne anthrax — bare spore.
I wasn't there, and the video clip linked in the story starts after the guy has already entered the store building.
I don't even own a face mask. I have an old handkerchief that I keep in my car just in case I go to some place where they have a sign out side that says face coverings are required. I have never come across a place where the employees tried to enforce this rule WITHOUT having a sign posted on the door.
The point is if masks are ineffective with health care workers who k is how to fit and wear them they are even more useless in the general public. I firmly believe masks make it worse. Joe sox pack goes into the grocery store wearing the same mask that has been in his car for a month. It is loaded with bacteria and respiratory secretions. While in the store he adjusts the mask multiple times and then touches other surfaces with his contaminated hands. done in the store? the mask with his cooties plus the other cooties he picked up touching things in the store goes in his pocket or glove box etc to marinate until the next use....
For most people unconcerned with their personal hygiene, uneducated in how PPE works and how to handle oneself WRT to said PPE amid a myriad of other issues like proper fitment, etc. yeah, it is more harmful than good.
To just impugn every cloth mask or surgical mask wearer is (IMO) a bit beyond the pale though. The same goes for the inanimate object (the mask itself) as they can be more or less effective depending on a lot of variables, get all of them right and efficacy of prevention might rise up to the 20% level.
None of the methods are worthless, but their worth in general public use is highly questionable and certainly doesn’t rise to any level of efficacy that would or should be convincingly presented as anything but a small percentage differential at best. (3-5% decrease of transmission likelihood in the right hands is something to consider, but it certainly isn’t worth all the brouhaha.)

The N95 mask is spec’d to screen particles of 300nm and larger (bacteria for instance). The COVID19 virus has a small head diameter of 37nm. You’re wrong in insisting that the N95 mask is preventitive.
I wore masks in semiconductor clean rooms. Those were spec’d to screen 100nm particles. Even those masks would not screen out the COVID19 virus.
The influenza A, Ebola, HIV, swine flu viruses also have very small diameters and would flow easily through the N95.

Everything I’ve posted here about respecting the wishes of a private business owner who orders his customers to wear masks is predicated on the assumption that I KNOW what these expectations are before I walk in the door.

Is your post only about the spread of large droplets ??? Ever heard of covering you mouth with a tissue ? Masks are useless against a virus. Viruses are tiny and fly right through a mask. Maybe someone can tell me why mask mandates are occurring??? Masks are useless at preventing the spread of Covid as you admitted in your post. Masks are useless
I admitted no such thing. I stated that their effectiveness is probably overblown and alluded to the idea of mandates being premised on poorly formed conclusions and misinterpreted data and especially misguided faith in the general public being able to comport themselves correctly WRT PPE and how it actually works to prevent spread through droplets of numerous sizes (based on studies that I linked to if you bothered to read any of my other posts on this thread) and if everything is done correctly!
Not all masks are created equally, not all fabrics or textiles will do as good of a job as others, none of them are totally ineffective if used correctly, and nothing in this world is perfect. There are varying degrees of capability and tons of variables when it comes to the average or below average person using any kind of PPE or mask or what have you, therein lies the rub.
