A former television news anchor. A retired New York City police officer and high school civics teacher. An attorney who runs a mediation practice and serves as a volunteer minister.

These are just a few of the candidates -- Democrats and Republicans -- who have lined up to challenge three of the most high-profile freshman House Democrats: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.

It's not easy to unseat a sitting member of Congress, and the three members of the progressive "squad" have a number of built-in advantages as they run for reelection.

But they have become high-profile targets of criticism during their relatively short time in office so far.

All three have faced controversy over outside-the-mainstream political positions, frequently facing attacks from President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans. On a national level, Republicans have worked to turn their outspoken support for progressive politics into a liability for the Democratic Party.

I like how it says they have “faced controversy”. As if it came after them, not that they were trash talking bitches.

Tlaib represents a Michigan area that is well known for ‘choosing poorly’ - they elected John Conyers for over half a century. The election to replace Conyers after his death late in the term, had two parts. One was to fill the remaining time of his current term, the other to fill the next term. In their infinite wisdom, his voters of his district chose two different people for this seat. Tlaib won the Grand Prize, the full two year next term.

Considering the renowned wisdom of her voters, and the general situation that ANY publicity is good publicity, it will be quite difficult to oust her.

The opponents had better pick the strongest among them and work together to defeat the incumbents. Their mere numbers will defeat them if they do not focus the opposition to AOC, Tlaib and Omar the Brotherlover.

Guess maybe they can be successes in their own minds, but failures in reality & we will just wait & wait & see how that works out in the long run....not that we don’t already know.

“Crowded field” = “a tactic to secure re-election by splintering your opposition”.
