The mother of NSA leaker Reality Winner speaks out: 'Everything about her case has been so harsh and just cruel'
Business Insider ^ | 6 June 2020 | Charles Davis

Billie Winner-Davis doesn't get it, or maybe she does. How can Paul Manafort, chairman of President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, get compassionate release from prison — years before his slated release, after lying about his dealings with Russian intelligence assets — while someone who leaked a report about Moscow's efforts to interfere in elections, like her daughter, languish behind bars?

And whatever happened to all of those people who used to champion the cause of persecuted whistle-blowers?

"As each chapter of this unfolds, I see just how corrupt our system really is, and I see just how powerless the average American is," Winner-Davis, the mother of former US intelligence contractor Reality Winner, told Business Insider.

She did that, really. Upon questioning by investigators, she admitted to everything she did. She then accepted a plea agreement and reported to prison.

I don’t agree with her actions, but she certainly did accept responsibility for them. Now she’s doing time for those actions.

However, her mother does have a point that this seems to be a singular case where someone caught doing this was actually sent to prison at all, let alone for any significant time. I wish the DOJ would be more consistent. There was nothing particularly unusual or egregious about this case to make you think it merits a harsher response than what is commonly seen. I’m not a fan of leaks and I wish they’d go after leakers more in general to discourage it, but this case seems like an odd one to suddenly decide severe enforcement is important. There are plenty of other examples far more deserving of this kind of treatment.

"...but she certainly did accept responsibility for them. "

She accepted the plea deal of 5 years willingly. How is filing an appeal, and asking for clemency accepting responsibility? She's whined about suffering from depression and an eating disorder. She wrote in her journal that she wanted to burn down The White House, and move to Nepal or Kurdistan. She played a game and got caught, and could have gotten a longer sentence.

She’s never denied what she did. She’s never claimed what she did wasn’t wrong. She’s never claimed someone else made her do it. She admitted what she did wrong immediately and accepted a plea deal.

Now that she sees just how harsh prison life is, she’s asking for clemency. I don’t see anything wrong with making the request and it absolutely does nothing to diminish her taking responsibility. And again, I ask if you can find a single other case where the DOJ decided an individual doing what she did required that severe of a punishment.

She and other leakers need to be punished to deter that activity. However, the DOJ has been wildly inconsistent at best and in this case seems to have no reason to push this hard against a naive and foolish girl beyond “we can, and screw her”. That isn’t how the DOJ is supposed to work. A couple years in prison, permanent loss of any security clearance, total career destruction, and the permanent label of convicted felon should be plenty of penance for her sins. She was a foolish girl who made stupid choices. She’s not some deep cover agent for a foreign government looking for missile codes. If she were, the DOJ (based on historical evidence) would have pushed for a couple years in prison. Instead, she gets two and a half times that for leaking a report about suspected election interference? Crazy.

She accepted a plea deal of five years. That was her decision. General Flynn has gone through more crap than she has for a longer period of time, for doing nothing wrong at all, and lost far more than Reality Winner did. She got off easy.

In addition to the one document she leaked to The Intercept, she also made off with a thumbdrive of data but it is not known what she did with it.

She also said she would support Iran if the US and Iran ever went to war.
