President Barrack Obama NEVER ONCE made a comment about slavery on June 19th while he was in office.
Does anyone know if ken burns civil war mentions it? I watched it years ago and am generally knowledgeable on civil war history and had never heard of it.
I actually think we should promote it as the day the Republicans freed the last of the slaves from their Democrat slaveowners. And say it was first recognized as a holiday during the administration of President Trump.
To be honest, I heard the name of the holiday and knew it had special meaning for blacks, but really wasnt sure why. Raised in NJ.
It would be interesting to see how many selfies Obama posted on this date.
We are following the path of South Africa. We were just 30 years behind them.
I don’t personally celebrate Ramadan, Passover or Kwanza but I respect others rights to do so. If people want to celebrate Juneteenth I say go for it but like the other mentioned holidays, no federal holiday.
President Obama issued WH press releases on Juneteenth in 2011, 2012, 2014-2016. Skipped 2009, 2010, and 2013. Must have slipped his mind.
I’ve known about it for decades, but I’m a sponge for that sort of thing. I don’t recall it ever being a celebration among a majority of black Americans outside of Texas. It has and has had its advocates, though.
Trump’s right that he’s the best thing that has happened for that advocacy. Everyone that hates him is going to demand it, now. So for them, as of now, anyone that disagrees is racist, and deserves their life to be destroyed.
Actually it is not even true. The last of the slaves were not freed until 1866 when the U.S. entered into treaties with the Five Civilized Tribes which abolished slavery. The Cherokees and other tribes were slaveholders who sided with and fought with the Confederacy.
After watching the Press try to gang up on Kayleigh today, I am tired of the double-standard.
I want to call it out and make mention of it.
Actions and words.
President Trump is a Man of Action and Clinton & Obama are people who talk about change and do nothing but point the finger at others.
I don’t understand why they want to celebrate white racists telling slaves in Texas about emancipation TWO AND ONE HALF years after they were emancipated. I’d be pretty pissed if someone kept that good news from me for that long.
It’s right up there with Kwanza with me. Just watch, Kwanza will be a national holiday eventually too.
What about Muslims who STILL keep slaves to this day?

Apple updated my calendar with this shit yesterday or shortly b4
It’s been a thing here in the Silicon Valley area for a long time. I don’t know why it caught on here. I probably first heard about it 20 or 25 years ago.
Statement by the President on the Observance of Juneteenth
On this day 150 years ago, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, the slaves of Galveston, Texas finally received word that the Civil War was over. They were free. A century and a half later, Americans still recognize this occasion, Juneteenth, as a symbolic milestone on our journey toward a more perfect union. At churches and in parks, lined up for parades and gathered around the barbecue pit, communities come together and celebrate the enduring
promise of our country: that all of us are created equal...”
