Ian Holm, the versatile actor who played everything from androids to hobbits via Harold Pinter and King Lear, has died in London aged 88, his agent confirmed to the Guardian.

“It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88,” they said. “He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer,” adding that his illness was Parkinson’s related. “Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.”

I first saw him in “Mary Queen of Scots” (1971) he was stabbed to death. Traumatized me as a kid.

His character also gave Chariots of Fire a good reality check.

I remember when that movie came out.
The MSM tried to paint it as about racism.
Churches all over the country were telling their people to see it.
I think I saw it twice in theaters.

He also played Hamlet’s father, in that adaptation starring Mel Gibson.

It was Time Bandits and Brazil that brought him to my attention.

Some of us are STILL in deep therapy from Time Bandits! What a weirdfest...

I saw Time Bandits when I was a kid and it still creeps me out to this day. Probably due to how good David Warner was in it.

So, did this break the cycle?
So far, the actors have been passing away in the same order as they did in Alien.
First was John Hurt (Kane), then Harry Dean Stanton (Brett).
Dallas (Tom Skerritt) should have been next, but was actually last if you take into account the deleted scene when Ripley finds Dallas cocooned in the bowels of the Nostromo.
Ian Holm was playing an android. Something not really alive or dead.

Either way, RIP, Ash.

The Fifth Element is better than 80% of Star Wars movies because it had actual actors, that could act and not wood, reading lines.

A few years before that he was the treacherous android, Ash, in Alien and later he played the lead character, Pod Clock, in a BBC version of The Borrowers. So besides LOTR and Bilbo Baggins, he just about made playing fantasy characters his "oeuvre". Doctor Willis, who "treated" George III madness and with what amounted to torture and restraints, and trainer Sam Mussabini in Chariots of Fire were two more conventional roles. But he was brilliant and memorable in everything he did.

It’s not the prettiest quarter I’ve ever seen Mr. Liddell....but the bravest.
