I saw a fireball during the day once. It wasn’t very bright, but definitely burning and leaving a black smoke trail that dissipated quickly. It looked like it was only a block or so away and moving slow, but it must have been dozens of miles up and going several miles per second.
Oh I saw a bright one in full daylight in the 1960’s, red, green and yellow with a smoke trail. Like many in the Northeast, we jumped in the family car to follow it, thinking it came down within a few miles. I believe it actually exploded over Alaska.
