Bryson DeChambeaus outrageous power show at the PGA Tours comeback event has convinced Colin Montgomerie of the urgent necessity for the governing bodies to introduce a tournament ball. Like everyone who watched the opening rounds of the Charles Schwab Challenge, Montgomerie was stunned by the transformation of the 26-year-old American. In the Tours three-month hiatus, DeChambeau added so much bulk he has gone from a medium in shirts to an extra-large. And, if anything, the distance which the world No 13 generates in hitting a ball has been even more staggering. In the first round at the tight, treelined Colonial Country Club, he averaged 345 yards. The PGA Tour average in 2019 was 294 yards. Ive put on about 20lb [since the lockdown] and about 45lb in the last nine months, DeChambeau said after a second successive 65 took him to 10 under par at the halfway point.

Tiger walked about 3 feet from me at Sawgrass.
He wasn’t that big. I’d say 6’ 175.
Good shape and lean, but not remotely big.
I was far larger.
He can drive. Can he putt, too?
I digress, but I turned on the TV to watch the tournament yesterday. It took all of five minutes to have the racist narrative shoved down my throat. Bye bye golf, I turned to the 2015 Breeder’s Cup, too bad you couldn’t bet on it.
I too was hoping for escape from the lunacy and disgusted by the efforts to out-kneel one another. I liked Varner’s comments. Although I’d have preferred to hear about golf.
When the PGA moved that tourney from trumps course to Mexico in protest to his being elected I bid adieu to them. Limousine liberals can GFT. They screwed fuzzy zoeller long ago. Irony is I liked tiger. Now I dont care. Pro Sports is an athletic event turned into a huge business and political event now. Even creeping into the college arena. Clemson is the latest fatality.
Just go to plastic wiffle golf balls with a 40 yard range so everyone takes ten strokes to hit the green.
I guess the other golfers better work-out more. It is called merit, you left-leaning losers. If he is better, others should work harder. What are they going to do soon...give out “participation” awards. Yet another sport being undermined by leftist thinking.
Im going to suggest that someone who puts on 45 lb. of muscle mass in nine months is using some serious performance-enhancing substances.
So can we expect to see Sammy Sosa and Mark MaGuire join the tour?

Was that before or after he got off the juice?
If he was on steroids, he sure didnt look it.
He just looked like a normal guy from the gym.
I highly doubt its all muscle. That guy isnt lean.
Maybe its a tumor ?
The transition of golfers conditioning and the equipment is just about the same as other sports. But the courses they are using are older and are no longer a problem. The equipment and the conditioning and teachings of the players has just over matched the courses except duringh the US Open when they take extra care to change the course preparation with more and higher rough, less trimming on the trees, cutting back on landing area size with additional traps and water, and other changes when it comes to town. This is why you don’t see 15 under at that one.
The problem here is that they are trying to say conditioning and equipment is an excuse to get beat when it all comes down to execution. About a generation apart, new innovations change the game. The last big one, Woods, was using a special club off the tees, one that got banned along with others using it, that took the competitiveness out of the game. But he didn’t fail at the game until his execution waned from injury. He executed what he could do, which was hit it long and close. (He’s not a very good putter)
The manufacturers made equipment changes to conquer the courses and are still doing it today. So until they change the courses to catch up with the equipment improvements, and the willingness of the players to do what they have to to win, and they stop the acceptance of a top 10 golfer being important because he makes an unGodly amount of money without winning, the competitiveness is going to suffer and those who aren’t will complain. Not because they choose their equipment wrong based upon their contracts for money, but because they aren’t willing to try to be the best with better conditioning, and using better execution of what they can do. Don’t look at distance without looking at club head speed. That’s gained through conditioning and the range. Old style.
Just follow the money and you’ll find the problem with golf, among other sports. But follow the desire to win in an individual sport and you’ll find people like DeChambeau. Don’t penalize him for success. Expect others to work as hard as he has and the commitment to get there.

Reduce to a standard of “x” square inches for the head of a wood. The size of some drivers is obscene.
When DeChambeau starts winning everything, I’ll consider a change. It’s not how far, but how many.
It could happen as he’s generating unheard of swing speeds, but that will surely wreak havoc on this body. Look for many injuries...and soon. imho.
Tiger says his physical problems were as a result of running for too much.
Running is great BUT it can take a heavy toll on ones knees and legs. Swimming is far better for you. Low impact.
It’s always been
Drive for show....Putt for dough, type of game.
A standardized tournament ball isn’t necessarily a bad idea, but it’s not the only answer. The club specs could/should be changed to limit the energy transfer.
At an average of 345 yds, he’s GiR on every hole and on in 1 on nearly every Par 4 and putting for double Eagle.
