Other than what I posted last night I am not sure what to add. It was a 'FUO' - fever of unknown origin. It happened to start on the day following laser eye surgery; I called the surgeon's office the next morning, Friday, but they said it was not a known hazard in their experience - contact your family Dr. His office had me come in that afternoon and took some blood and urine.
Up to that point the fever had been 100.5 - 101; I was controlling it with Tylenol for periods of time then it would reappear. Saturday morn I ran a few errands and, feeling tired in the afternoon, I took a nap. Not feeling tops on arising I took my temp and found it at 102°. That's my tipping point; I am not waiting around for 103° - the classic crisis point. My son took me to the ER and the rest is pretty much as told last night.
To their credit the hospital Dr's dug thoroughly for an underlying cause. Each time they found something they would come and say, Your blood cell counts are all dangerously low! ...and I would say - yes I have had pancytopoenia for over 20 years; I told my Dr it is a classic symptom of cancer, we did a bone marrow biopsy maybe 20 years ago, but we decided since nothing seemed to be wrong we would take a wait-and-see approach.
Then they came in with more specialists to point out there was a large cellular mass growing in the right side of my abdomen! ...and I would say - yes, it is a large lipoma growing on my right kidney. They said it is too large to just be a lipoma and I said, as I told the surgeon six years ago, if you think it should come out then remove it. At the time the surgeon said, oh well, it is holding your organs in place.
My urologist sent in an assistant and we set up an appointment to talk it over. I imagine with roots in the kidney or adrenal gland it could present some hazards to remove it; we will see. It is not clear it is causing a problem. The hospital took an MRI so that might help evaluating the issue. The MRI showed no appreciable growth over the 2010 and 2016 CT imaging.
Today I started the laborious process of catching up - seemingly a Herculean task of late. Also I found my power backup for my 'puter, router, printer, etc. disconnected and dumped in my chair... battery, I suspect. Just what I need at such a moment. sigh
Tomorrow back to my PCP's office for another followup. I will try to see what can be done with the power supply. I still have an overflowing email box and didn't get on FR much until bed tonight. No rest for the weary. I also reset the follow-up appointment for the eye surgeon that I missed Monday - but both eyes seem to be doing well. The right eye may not need further attention.
I am sure that the prayers and good wishes of FReepers and others tipped the scales in my favor. Thanks all.
