The attack is the crime, but basing it on an attempt to suppress free speech, the right to free assembly, or in order to target a whole ethnic or racial group Is actually a separate violation in itself.
“Just” assaulting somebody to rob them or because it’s a neighbor you don’t like,,etc., is a different thing from assaulting sometime to intimidate them and stop them from speaking, voting, or exercising any other constitutional right.
Wait till you get assaulted trying to go to the polls this November.

I couldn’t disagree with you more strongly - I do not want to live an a society where the government has the right to punish thought or intent. (It might be too late already.)
Besides - do you really think this sort of idiocy will ever benefit conservatives in practice? It all just paves the way for “Hate Speech” crimes, which is what we’re really going to be attacked with if we let this crap continue.
