A species of giant squid called the Humboldt squid sometimes makes into the waters off Southern California. They’re about one to two feet long and are fun to catch. To catch them, you need a squid jig, a plug that is studded with spikes, because a fishhook will slip through the squid’s flesh.

When you hook a squid, it will fight back by squirting you with a jet of seawater and when you get it on board the boat, it will squirt you with ink. They’re edible, but not as good as other species of squid.

There are a few videos on youtube showing much larger Humboldt squid attacking a diver.

Here’s one:

Used to mess with the tiny squid around Key West Very cool to get them to squirt ink, and try to disappear while I was visually distracted by the ink.
