State officials confirmed Monday that troopers with the Minnesota State Patrol slashed tires of vehicles during protests last week over the death of George Floyd.

In a statement, the Department of Public Safety said troopers slashed the tires so the vehicles could not be used to attack other people.

"There were instances when State Patrol troopers strategically deflated tires to keep vehicles from being used in attacks," DPS officials said.

Department officials also said it also allowed vehicles to be towed for evidence.

Slashed tires?

Why could the troopers not just put sugar in the gas tank?

"When they pulled the black couple out of their car in Atlanta, one dressed in combat/swat stabbed one front tire, then the other, and then busted out the drivers window, to get to the driver."

SWAT teams and the no knock warrants that allow them to play delta force in our neighborhoods need to be gone forever. They are already illegal under our constitution. Nearly all constitute and unreasonable search and most even more than that. The last thing we need are cops who can't tell a cell phone from a handgun carrying MP5 Sub machine guns and military grade M16s. There is no war in progress on our soil and if there ever is that's why we have a military.

Why not just have SWAT pull an AT4 rocket launcher out of the armored car an dissentagrate the offending civilian vehicle with a rocket full of high explosive.

I see little need for militarized police. Until there’s a big riot and you need them.

I believe SWAT has a place but that it should be highly limited. I used to know a guy who was on a national team for a Federal agency.

When they did a raid, it was scheduled, not just let’s go. He sometimes had to fly cross country for a raid, so there was a significant cost. That alone limited the use.

When a local department has all the cool toys they’ll find the excuses to use them, often unwisely.

And many innocent people are killed and there is rarely ANY accountability. SWAT teams are an absolute menace to a free society.

Sounds like you’re dangerously close to drinking the BLM Kool Aid.

I stipulate that we don’t need much of the militarized stuff and that some cops are power tripping, but Many innocent people killed equaled two last year in one statistic I saw.

It’s two too many, but it’s not an epidemic.

The problem is we have a highly militarized police culture. This militarization has created a mindset that officers see every person as a threat rather than a citizen. At the same time we have too many laws. This all started in the 70's with the advent of the SWAT team. SWAT teams planted the seed for the conflict we have today.

That is exactly correct. And at the same time, the name of the police was changed from Peace Officer (PO) to Law Enforcement Officer(LEO).So the police went from keeping the peace to being a revenue agent for the State. Hmmm, how is that working out.

Hope they only did the rear tires to make it easier for the tow trucks drivers.

I believe the plan of the “protesters” was to drive to the suburbs to continue “protesting,” in which deflating the tires of the kind folk who were merely letting the public “share in their grief” by looting and burning businesses and government buildings, deflating tires, was one way to prevent that from happening.

If said “peacefully protesting” was moving to neighborhoods, breaking down doors and windows, looting and setting fire, where law abiding citizens were fearful of continued violence witnessed on television by the “peaceful protesters,” preventing such movement without physical confronting the “protesters,” was worthwhile. Certainly as law enforcement was told to “stand down” for the “protesters,” preventing movement was one choice to make that happen.

Just loosening the valve stem would be enough. No damage; just inconvenient.

I would suggest checking in to the statistic you just quoted. I can come up with 4 just here in Texas off the top of my head and could probably come up with more than a half a dozen to even 10 just here in Texas. Not all Swat but narcotics teams, Swat, and other call outs.

No I’m not even close to BLM in any way shape or form. BLM is a militant socialist group operating under the guise of racism. Unfortunately for those that back legitimate and appropriate policing, modern militarized law enforcement is handing BLM their agenda on a silver platter. The irony is there is a hidden truth in the otherwise phony racist BLM agenda. The truth is Law Enforcement is so far off the rails in their mission it would be easier to toss the whole system and start over. The reality is our once public service peace officers have actually become a standing army creating their own crisis by over use of weaponry and force then using these very crisis to justify even more powerful military capability.

I'm thinking SWAT should be a State Police function, which the local municipality would need to formally request, and supply justification for. That would cut down a lot of the abuse.
