Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood - Rachmaninov - Vespers

Bright and shiny new art video. In 1881, Tsar Alexander II was fatally wounded in St Petersburg by political nihilists. In 1883, his son, Alexander III, began construction of this privately funded Russian Orthodox church over the place where his father was assassinated. "On Spilled Blood" refers to that murder. The church was completed in 1907, under Tsar Nicholas II. Today it's a museum. The music is parts 6 and 15 from Rachmaninov's Vespers.

I’m starting to think of the church as a gigantic Faberge Easter egg that you can stand in the middle of, instead of holding in your hand. I made a lovely friend through the Good Omens fandom and he mentioned his travels, so I begged him – as a stay-at-home – for a travelogue, and he began with his trip to Russia and exulted over this church. So I looked it up and, voila, I had my next project. Asked about music, and he enthused over this one, which he had sung in chorus. I love putting friends, and the memory of friends, into videos. It makes playing them that much nicer.

If you enjoy seeing the work of non-famous painters, I did this video around 1990 of Alayne Gelfand’s art to the music of Hertel. I deeply enjoy her experimentation and the various styles she tries. There’s a feel of German Expressionism to a few, but it’s her stained glass look that fascinates me. Her art has sold for some good prices.

Thanks mairdie, I would love to see this in person.
Although St. Basil’s in Moscow probably gets more glamour shots, I’ve heard its interior is not impressive, as it’s all broken up into hallways or tunnels. I love the onion dome architecture.
I’ve been informally studying Russian for a couple years and just for fun ordered 3-D puzzles of both structures.
They were fun to put together, but of course had no inside features.

The Koreans are naturally gifted in music. I watch a lot of Korean musical performances. I especially like their choral work. They love Western Baroque, especially Handel. And, of course they do Beethoven very well. And as I watch Korean music videos I look at the women, who are so graceful, feminine, and beautiful and readily understand why so many of our servicmen maried korean and other Asian women.

And, quite frankly I watch a few American symphonic visdeos and note all the Asians in our top flight orchestras. One day it dawned on me that it’s a shame so few Americans know or care about our musical legacy and the power of our music and the Anglish language, that the Asians are going to save and preserve our musical culture, hence Westrn Civilization.

Lovely as always!

Could you eventually do an Ancient Greek one? Not right this minute or anything but sometime?

I really enjoy these posts.

I do intend to do something Greek. I had an entire class in ancient Greek and Roman architecture. To this day, I’ll point out the different types of column tops to husband when we’re looking at neo-classical buildings.

So very, very glad you’re enjoying them. I didn’t post to FR, but I just put up a video of the fan art of a dear friend.

Hah!
You and me both! I was required to take Art History as an undergrad and I still remember a shocking amount of it despite having no artistic talent.

Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian!

Wonderful. Just Wonderful.
I have sung that once or twice when I was in church choir.

So very glad you liked it.

I ALWAYS look for old choir pieces. We sang O Magnum Mysterium and I searched endlessly before I found a piece that reminded me of the version we sang and used it for Paul doing a video of nativity scenes. I still have one song from choir days in my back pocket for Easter. “Call me now, no more, Naomi. From today call me Mara.”

I was about to say that it isn’t all that hard to find, but then I’m remembering the art museum, of which I’m a member, which keeps sending out notices while they’re closed to tell me how woke they are. And the Art Institute in Chicago that sold off MY FAVORITE PIECE! I’m guessing, to buy something more “relevant.”

So where we used to just fall into beauty, now, it seems, we have to go searching. So I will say, “You’re most welcome.” And send along a few hugs to reinforce.
