I think what he made is extremely unstable as apparently was he. One little bobble ... lawn mower accident. Missing a hand and “several fingers” - Sounds like he had it in both hands as he went to his van. Bang - I hate when that happens. ;-)

Many would-be bomb makers manage to spill some of the pressure sensitive explosive on the threads of the pipe bomb and then detonate it as they screw the cap on. Ooops!
