A couple of his Pitt teams were among the best ever.

Yup. The last time Pitt football was significant on the national stage.

Within a few years Foge Fazio would be coaching a group of thugs who could not stay off of the police blotter.

His coaching career back at Tennessee ended rather awkwardly...He wasn’t having a very good season and had a heart attack...Philip Fulmer took over and began to win...Majors came back way too soon because Fulmer had turned things around...He was never the same after that and Fulmer was hired as the next head coach...

A couple of his Pitt teams were among the best ever.

He only won one national championship at Pitt. Pitt had a 1 loss season and a final number 2 ranking with Dan Marino at QB, but Jackie Sherrill coached that team, and it wasn't among the best ever anyway.

RIP, Johnny.
Bill Battle was coach at UT when I got there and soon Johnny came marching home from Pitt. We were excited thinking his Pitt magic could revive Big Orange football but it must have worn off. He stayed away from UT after the Fulmer resurrection but ended his days as an active Vol for Life. He was a hoot to watch on his Sunday morning coaches show. I swear he was looped sometimes. (They filmed usually on Sat night). In his playing days, he placed second in the Heisman Trophy behind Paul Hornung -ND/Green Bay Packers. I thought a lot of Coach Majors.

Seems like every Tennessee coach's career has been ending awkwardly.

Kiffen’s wife played a big part in him resigning...She was too attracted to the bright lights of Hollywood and southern California...Knoxville didn’t have the allure she wanted...
That’s one reason she divorced him...

Yep...When Mike Hamilton dumped Fulmer, he almost ruined Tennessee football...What a POS AD Hamilton was...

They would’ve been fine if they’d kept Fulmer...
