Toms River Businesses Begin Boarding Up Windows Ahead of Tuesday’s Peaceful Protest

TOMS RIVER, NJ – You can’t help but to think Toms River Police and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department are playing down Tuesday’s BLM protest being held in Downtown Toms River, but local businesses aren’t taking any chances and don’t have the same level of comfort as local law enforcement agencies. This afternoon, businesses began boarding up their storefronts from Route 37 down to Water Street ahead of the protests. We reached out earlier to both the Toms River Police Chief Mitch Little and Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy regarding several warnings of threats against the community on social media. We received no response from Mastronardy and Mitch Little responded via his assistant, Jillian Messina with a canned message posted by police earlier on Facebook.

Exit 82 Scanner News today posted some photos of businesses, most of which have been closed for two-months from the Phil Murphy lockdown, putting plywood sheets over their storefront windows ahead of the protest.

The ominous scene is playing out just two weeks before these businesses have been told they can reopen by the Governor today and just days after Toms River announced restaurants, including those businesses located downtown, can reopen in two weeks with sidewalk dining service.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer today echoed the sentiments of both Little and Mastronardy promising that tomorrow’s protest will be peaceful and not degrade into violence as others around the country have over the past three days.

One post circulated on social media today warning residents to avoid Downtown Toms River, including Kohl’s department store, noting protesters will be marching between 10 am and 8 pm. Another said the protest will happen downtown next to the Ocean County Administration Building at the corner of Hooper Avenue and Washington Street.

Billhimer said the threatening post was unfounded.

“We are expecting a peaceful protest/gathering tomorrow June 2, 2020, in Toms River. We stand in solidarity with those that wish to protest peacefully,” Prosecutor Billhimer said. “We are aware of rumors circulating on social media regarding this protest/gathering and there is no evidence at this time to support those rumors. In collaboration with our law enforcement partners, we will be ready handle any situation that may arise.”

The Toms River Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Department echoed similar messages throughout the day.

So if antifa is all white what stuff of theirs do others have? Blacks, Mexicans and Indians are the ones who say everything was stolen from them but all white people saying that sounds a little suspect to me that this is only an all white group.

That's racist.

I had the misfortune of living in Toms River for a 18 months.
I never met a more munch of thugs in my life! My house had house window pry marks, gas was siphoned, tires were attempted to be stolen, daughter threaten with assault. The problem according to “good” Toms River Folks was that the people form northern NJ moved to Toms River AND they brought their hoodlum kids with them!
NEVER LIVE IN NJ!!

Nothing to do in Toms River, except the beach for 3 months. Cabin fever, plus a lot of low lifes and the chemical factory made a lot of people nuts. Don’t drink the water in Toms River

Yup! The beach was great! Took the kids there during the summer when ever we could.
The High School was great for my daughters.

Democrats strike again. A gang of violent criminals announces that your town is on the list to be ransacked and it’s great, but a message telling fellow residents to be on the lookout for marauding Democrats is a “threatening post”.

Hurricane season started on June 1.
The first storm of the season is named Antifa? WTF?
What Category is it? What does the cone of travel looking like?
Are the newscasters finding good footage to make us wet our pants?
Gun sales will probably be great this summer.
People using their stimulus checks to upgrade the armory and buy ammo.

Oh please. Toms River is not hell on earth. Not even close. A very middle of the road shore town.

Toms River can’t even remotely have anything to do with the events in Minneapolis.

It’s just party season for leftists.

I work in Toms River at Community Medical Center. I have to work tomorrow. I work in the ER. I can say this unequivocally: The cops in Toms River are THE biggest, most badass looking cops I have every seen. I'm talking 6'2, 260 at a minimum. And they can be backed in a heartbeat by the NJ State Police.

Good spot. The Ocean County Jail is right by the Courthouse.

I never said it was hell on earth

It is just only relevant for 3 months out of the year and the place is boring as heck 9 months out of the year. It does have a drug/drug trade problem and lots of breakin/theft type of crime.

Depends on neighborhood. I know people there and it is middle class suburb USA. Why does a suburban community near the shore need to be “relevant”.

It’s a nice community.

Its a seasonal tourist town, has no large industry, the large chemical/dye factory in town was closed up decades ago.

It is also the county seat for ocean county, so it does have the court houses, but it does have a drug/seedy problems along 37, and plus being neighbors to seaside doesn’t help much.

A decade ago the boss of Toms River went to prison for corruption charges. The Feds raided his Seaside Ocean Front Mansion, his school office, the board of education homes and offices, his construction company, which was being run out of the Toms River board of education office.
