The wife of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of a man in custody, has filed for divorce.

Chauvin is the white officer who was seen on video kneeling for several minutes on the neck of George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who pleaded for air until he lost consciousness. Chauvin was fired, along with three other police officers at the scene, and has been criminally charged.

According to a statement released by a Minneapolis lawyer, Derek Chauvin’s wife, Kellie Chauvin, “is devastated by Mr. Floyd’s death and her utmost sympathy lies with his family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy.”

The statement says that “she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time.”

Kellie Chauvin was crowned Mrs. Minnesota in 2018. She has children from a previous marriage. She holds an active real estate license, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Derek Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after the video showed him kneeling for nearly nine minutes on the neck of Floyd, suspected of passing a counterfeit bill at a convenience store on Memorial Day.

Floyd’s death has sparked protests, some of them violent, across the country.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

She could also testify on the nature of their marriage. Their marriage could have been on the rocks already and this just happened to be the last straw. Much of his character was on display during that eight minute episode, plus there are reports of many complaints about him in the past.

“””””Could be a way of protecting assets before the lawsuits hit too.””””””””””””

My thoughts as well. It’s a good way to shield assets from an army of blood sucking lawyers that will come after him for years.

Wonder what has to be going on in Derek's mind

I've thought of that so many times. Imagine being the thing that's blamed for all the riots. Imagine being the most hated man in the country. I'm sure they must have him on suicide watch.

Maybe she doesn’t want to be married to a violent freak.

"So much for 'stand by your man'."

That was mocked a couple of generations ago and spawned the illegitimate children rioting in the streets.

I would say she is being realistic about their future. He’s a criminal and likely will spend most of the rest of his life in prison. It’s entirely feasible that the marriage wasn’t that strong and she’s saving what they have for her and her children!!!

Split the assets before the civil suit is filed.

I think the fraudulent transfer statutes probably kick in and make any joint assets held by Chauvins subject to surrender to satisfy the claims for any action that happened while the assets were jointly held. The courts tend to frown on these types of transparent shenanigans.

Guess what ! The imprisoned police officer's wife, Kellie Chauvin, is "a woman of color".

She is Asian, born in Laos in 1974. Her parents immigrated from Taiwan to the USA in 1980.

She married at age 17.....and divorced her first husband with whom she had two children.

She was selected as "Mrs. Minnesota" in 2018.

Her timing to divorce officer Chauvin at the time when his whole life is being torn apart is obviously no problem at all for this no-longer-loving wife.

....("from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer...in sickness and in health....")

I'm hoping the divorce decision was one they both made amicably in an effort to protect her, the kids and the assets...but you never know. Maybe it's just a case of "Me no love you long time, Joe."

(Mrs. Minnesota? I don't see it!)

[Which man? This is at least her second husband. ]

There’s a reason why marrying a divorcee is a risk.
