I recall reading a book or article which discussed Lincoln’s Cooper Union speech. It was emphasized that the speech was intended to be provocative to the slavery party and that it was firmly understood that way at the time. This was counter to an interpretation of Lincoln’s views on slavery as more conciliatory.
