I was watching some old war movies on Monday, and I am reminded of one with an unforgettable scene but whose title I simply cannot remember.
It's set in China, and in the scene I mentioned Philip Ahn (Master Kan from "Kung Fu") is calmly teaching his students as the Japanese bombs fall around them. He asks them what their country is.
"Our country is goodness" says one student.
"Our country is kindness [or something like that]" says another.
"Goodness and kindness [or whatever] make fine countries," he tells them. Anyway the implication is that they are all killed in the bombing.
It's a moving scene, and I have looked Philip Ahn up on the IMDB, but if it's listed I'm missing it somehow.
Has anyone seen this movie? Does anyone remember the title?
Sounds like THIRTY SECONDS OVER TOKYO, maybe.
IMDB Philip Ahn... Also googled the line you provided. I think maybe “China Girl” ???
Scratch that, he wasnt in it. Maybe DRAGON SEED?
CHINA SKYs another possible.
Sounds like “China Sky” to me. Do you remember who else was in it? “China Sky” starred Randolph Scott, if that helps, and it was set mostly in a hospital in China.
If you go thru his list of films, it maybe should pop to mind:
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0014217/
Standing and singing, "Randolph Scott".
Maybe
China (1943)
It featured fleeing students.
There are sources that say he was in dozens of WW2 movies.
Beat me to it, but I have video...
My first impression also, the China side of the Doolittle Raid. Great movie.
Standing and singing, “Randolph Scott”.
Lol
Good job. I'm glad somebody else got the reference.
There was one that I remember only a piece of.
It was a WWII movie where the GIs were going to outfox the Germans by putting chains on their jeeps to make them sound like tanks.
Black and white and probably 50s era.
I think that was Hell is for Heroes.
I’ve been looking for an old-but-color movie set in China as well. This movie was set during the Communist Revolution, and depicted inept nurses being promoted to the position of medical Dr. within the hospitals, and killing patients as they botched surgeries. Anyone recall that?
Philip Ahn (Korean) and Richard Loo (Chinese) played villainous Jap officers in several WWII films.
Back to Bataan is one example.
Don’t know but checkout “12 o’clock High” with Gregory Peck. It was mandatory viewing when I went into Air Force. Also, as a younger kid “Fighter Squadron” with Robert Stack made an impression.
There was also, The Dam Busters. And a great one with Jack Palance.
