I have a sneaking feeling he has many more admirers than detractors here in Freeper world. Count me definitely in the admirer group.

Rosemary Queen of Hearts

Bob Dylan had an outstanding voice when he recorded this ballad. One of my favorites of all time. Easy for me to understand every word. A classic; not sure who wrote it, but it will be listened to 100 years from now.

It tells an amazing and sad story.

I think he wrote the song about that ship, the Cat Stevens.

Happy birthday!

Dylan wrote it.

He wrote that over 600 more. Nobel Prize in 2016 well deserved IMHO

Wow, that is just good writing. Tells a riveting story, keeps moving, heroes and villains, innocent, or not so innocent caught up in the moment, corrupt but final justice. Unfairness of life.

Just wow, anyone who has not taken the time to listen and comprehend this ballad is missing a lot, IMHO.

I have listened to Rosemary Queen of Hearts at least 100 times and I still get chill bumps on my arms!

“Tangled Up In Blue” is similar in those regards. One of my favorites of his.

Dylan wrote a LOT of very good songs - “Like A Rolling Stone” is one of my all time favs. The Byrds cover of “My Back Pages” is amazing.

That said...

Dylan’s songs lacked the complexity found in Joni Mitchell’s compositions - not only lyrically but to an even greater degree musically. JM’s music ranged from folk to pop to avantgarde to jazz to blues - and all done at a very high level.

Same with “Tangled up In Blue”. Chill bumps on my arms, even though I have heard the song 100+ times.

Can someone explain this phenomena? I am not an emotional, expressive guy.

I think my favorite Dylan song was "Cross the Green Mountain" from the soundtrack of Gods and Generals.......

Why on every thread about Dylan do you feel a need to make a post about how Joni Mitchell is so much better than Dylan? They are different, okay? So Mitchell uses alternate tunings and Dylan doesn't. So what? Dylan has had a dramatically greater impact than Mitchell, has written far more well-known songs than Mitchell, and his music will be remembered far longer than Mitchell's will. You dig Mitchell, great. With the exception of a couple of songs, I find her music uninteresting.

Pt 2; Has a lot of covers of Dylans song, most ones that are not as well known. Even an Elvis Presley cover!

Happy birthday Bob! You were so much older then, you’re even *younger* than that now! Thank you for “My Back Pages” (I play the Byrds’ version in my mind every Aug. 27 [my birthday]).

Blood on the Tracks was his best album, in my opinion.

One of his greatest moments was the day he broke with the snobbish folkies at the Newport Folk Festival, and brought out electric guitars. The folkies freaked out.

I’ve always loved Mr. Tambourine Man, here’s a live version at Newport from 1964:

Another fave is Desolation Row (live 1965):

That song features the oddly prophetic line:

“The beauty parlor is filled with sailors, the circus is in town”
