When I was a young kid in semi-rural Iowa in the early 60's we were taken to these so-called 'family reunions' to meet our 'cousins' as we were dropped off for a day or two to run wild on their farms.

Don't remember much as we were the age that thought Santa was real, but years later came to realize these weren't my cousins and they weren't family reunions either.  All these ficticious grandparents, aunts and uncles were just acquantices getting their grandkids (or even their great grandkids) together like a herd of animals.

And it wasn't chicken pox per se, it was measles, mumps, flus too and whatever else as the truth leaked out over the years.
