Probably so. In 1954, they had a trial and parents agreed to let their kids receive the Salk Vaccine. It took about a year for trial and reports. TPTB took about 2 hrs. to debate and decided to grant contracts to several labs.

So in 1955, the mass inoculations using schools began. Long lines of kids. Tragically, the Cutter lab had some bad batches, in which the virus was not killed, and a large number of kids got sick with polio. So they stopped it for about 3 weeks for investigation and changes.

Unfortunately, the changes didn't cure all the issues. It's an interesting history and riddled with sad stories for many years. But at least back then, parents had to sign a permission slip and return it to the school-it was not mandatory for attendance.

I went to grade school in the 60’s and I sure remember lining up with for shots. And my mom (or dad) had to sign a permission slip.
