The bedrock under the east side of Oak Island, where the money pit is located, is made up of Windsor Group limestone and gypsum.
"Given the right conditions, such as temperature, pressure, poor fluid composition, quite often these minerals, especially gypsum, they're prone to dissolution," Aitken said.
What you're left with is essentially a cavity in the bedrock, or a kind of cave. At the money pit, Aitken said the geological evidence suggests the roof of the cave collapsed.
He said there are also other sinkholes nearby, which further shows the so-called tunnels and pits are not engineered, as the show suggests.
"These are not man made. They are naturally formed features, they take sometimes thousands to even millions of years to form," he said.
But Aitken said while mystery hunters have been looking for buried treasure, they've missed the real riches.
"To me personally, the treasure on Oak Island has already been found in the form of archeological artifacts that have been discovered," Aitken said

Sounds like the program is over your head. That’s okay, though - don’t worry about it.
So they wasted it?
Isn’t there a curse of some sort that says that one more searcher will have to die before the treasure can be found?
OK, guys, who’s it going to be?
One of my hobbies is watching the cognitive dissonant marveling at their conspiracy theories. I used to try and help them, but they are beyond that, so I sit back and watch.
Half the reason I lurk here.
Very good post.
Same here.
Lol
If I were a pirate with great booty (not to be confused with the female anatomy) why in the hell would I bury it at great depth needing sophisticated engineering to recover. Why even bury it? Pirates lived in the moment and their stolen treasure was at their side on their ship.
The most successful pirates operated under the kings and one queen of Britain. They were given license to attack the Spanish and also had safe harbor in Britain and British territory. But, the crown must be given its share of the booty. It was a hell of a deal for the British Crown. The enemy was Spain. The pirates would finance the adventure against Spain at no cost to The Crown. The pirates kill the enemy and at times bring a warship back as additional booty and the pirates pay you for the privilege of safe harbor.
Free lance pirates spent it as soon as the got it. I doubt seriously they had any 401-Ks to worry about.
It occurred to me after reading this article that they wouldn’t have needed to excavate 130 feet down. They need only lower the treasure into an existing sinkhole and cover it up.
A gimmick show to sell ads.
Don’t know why I watch it, the show is so heavily produced and it’s funny how they have the same clean clothes on from week to week.
Oak Island tv show, is a well tv show. I find it interesting because the evidence they have uncovered.
No, no treasure. The archeology evidence is astounding.
We have a Roman ship wreck off shore. Complete with sword and Roman pillae that have been found. Romans in Newfoundland would be far earlier than Vikings.
We have mercury stained parchments, and wooden structures from the time of Sir Francis Bacon.
We have an entire swamp created before Columbus.
The real treasure is the information supporting theories that Europeans were in the new world way before Columbus.
“...We have an entire swamp created before Columbus....”
??
I think we had swamps before we had people!
Barry Fell originally a NZ oceanographer by academic training has said similar things. See America B.C. I find some of his claims wishful thinking but I think ancient people were more enterprising about travel then we give them credit for. Look at the Polynesians!
Oak Island - still very skeptical of their claims and the validity of their finds. Why am I that way? It’s TV - Entertainment ! Possibility of fraud is very high! Fraud for entertainment purposes would be their defense. Like pro wrestling! So my threshold on their stuff is pretty high. Still it would be cool if they are proven to be legitimate!
Thats what I was thinking. Ive watched every episode and Im convinced something was there. Something of great value. Im also convinced it was moved or looted a very long time ago. I wish them good luck and I find the show very entertaining. No politics, just fun to watch.
I have watched EVERY episode.
I don’t know if there still is a treasure to be found.
I don’t know if there ever was a treasure.
BUT, on a little island in the middle of NOWHERE, has certainly been visited by many European explorers. WHY? This is CENTURIES BEFORE any reports of buried treasure.
Instead of “The Curse Of Oak Island” it should be named “The Mysteries Of Oak Island”.
I don’t know about treasure and I don’t know about it being cursed, but Mysterious FOR SURE!
Ancient artifacts, what are they doing there? How did they get there? (To a small island in the middle of NOWHERE, that is).
If you don’t like the show, don’t watch it.
You would be in the minority.
“”Curse of Oak Island” is still the top rated cable TV show in America.” (April 2020)
“Is that show still on ?”
YES! And they are going to find the treasure in the NEXT episode! (or the next, or the next, ......)
I’ll stick with Oak Island NC.
