That is an enormous ray, for a freshwater ray. Marine rays, specifically the largest species of Manta ray, can reach a width of 7 meters (23 ft.) and weigh up to 3100 lbs. Still, anyone would be hard pressed to supply a fry pan big enough for a dinner cookout.

Barbecued stingray is very good - I’ve had it many times in Singapore. But taken from specimens much smaller than this. :)

Not so rare. I used to fly the Florida East Coast on a daily basis at about 3,000 feet in the air. Springtime had thousands of them traveling south to north about 2 miles out. They were as large as 4 man tents. Usually about ten feet deep in the water. It went on for about two months before letting up. Amazing sight.
