Actor Matthew McConaughey Brings Common Sense Back in Coronavirus Discussion With Fox News's Bret Baier

Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey made a surprise appearance on Fox News's Bret Baier's show Tuesday night to try and bring some common sense back to society. He regretted to see that we Americans started off on the same page, intent on defeating the coronavirus, but once again we let politics overwhelm us.

"About a month ago I could feel that this united purpose that we all have as Americans to beat this enemy and this virus, that purpose got hijacked a bit by partisan politics," McConaughey explained. "All of a sudden the narrative became, 'If you want to go work, you're on the far right. If you don't want to go to work and you want to stay home, you're on the far left.' And now even the mask wearing is getting politicized where if you want to wear a mask you're a liberal and if you don't you're a conservative. And that's just not true."

If we try to fight both the virus and each other, "we're going to lose," he warned.

"This is a tug of war with the virus, we need all hands on the rope if we're going to beat it."

And Americans are uniquely qualified to face this crisis, the actor insisted, reminding us of how the USA came together during other crises, such as World War II.

"We had a crisis that came to us and we were united that purpose," the actor said.

He encouraged viewers to act locally until we find a long term solution. McConaughey and his wife Camila founded the Just Keep Livin Foundation to support underserved students and and during the crisis have donated meals, laptops and other resources to children in need. They've also donated 200,000 face masks to frontline workers.

As with many of McConaughey's performances, his Fox News appearance got rave reviews.

I’m glad I read your post zeugma before I wrote mine - you expressed it better than I was going to post.

If my folks were still with us they would likely be wearing masks - especially my mom who suffered from COPD. But they wouldn’t be calling the cops because they saw someone going to the mailbox without a mask on. I bet the same is true of al_c’s folks - taking care of themselves and each other but not being Karen’s.

In Canada, our death rate is half of the US rate, but people here are absolutely terrified of this virus. It’s insane. I asked my boss about when do we get to return to work in the office, and people are worried about touching copy machines, door handles, fridge doors, ect... I need to get away from my kids and would have thought others would feel the same way, but they are really terrified of returning.
