Heh, that’s the spirit.

I tried carrying it, and it worked fine if I was wearing jeans with an IWB holster.

But I found that there were times when I didn’t want to lug a couple of pounds of steel around and went to the wheelgun.

Different solutions for different people.

I’m a bit of an oddball. Don’t care for concealed carry.

I believe that an openly carried weapon serves as a strong deterrent to actually having to use it.

Well, that has sparked endless debate on FR for the past couple of decades!

I think you might have missed my point.

If you practice, one or two rounds would be enough...leaving a bunch left over. If I was using it in combat, 17 rounds in my Glock makes sense. And I am not advocating limits—carry 30 rounds if you want.

Around 20 years ago I was on my parents property camping.

I decided to do some testing. I had several old cans of tomatoes. I focused a video camera at the cans and taped the cans as they were hit.

I first tried ,44 magnum with 240 gr. jhp. As expected the results were interesting. What I didn’t expect was the 9mm 90 gr jhp Super Vel was far more impressive.

Obviously I would not want to be hit with a .44 at that velocity, but that little 9mm buzz bomb, well it would be scary.

Bill Jordan put it this way. “A 6 inch deep creek just might have some deep holes”. Probably would not need all that ammo but you just might.

9mm on moonclips reload pretty quick. Not like jamming in a 17 rd mag, but not bad with practice.

I personally think all men have a banana shape they are fully comfortable with hiding, already.

NEVER use a .357 at night! The flash from the end of the barrel will blind you for any additional shots - the shorter the barrel, the worse the blinding will be.

Great for daytime self-defense of course.......if you have plenty of range time.......

Thanks for that info-I’ve only fired the .357 at the range-and I’ve never fired it at night-I sleep with the .38 under my pillow-have for years-if I need to go out on the property to investigate a noise at night, I have a 12 gauge pump by the sofa that I pick up-the flash and noise from that would be a bitch, but I would probably not need more than one shot-hopefully...

I like the Taurus 5 shot Judge. Fires a .45 long colt or a 410 shotgun shell. I keep my home defense weapon loaded with #6 shot .410’s.

“Those with arthritis need not reply.”

Racist.

Arthritis forced me to step down from the 1911, but I still carry a (little, tiny) semiautomatic.

“I would trust a .22 magnum before a little pocket .380, too”

Why?

I carry a “hammerless” S&W .38 Airweight in my jacket or vest pocket when I’m riding. Main reason is that I can fire through the pocket without a jam. Though it is a bit rough on the jacket.
My boring vehicle has a 9mm auto in the console. Can clip it in a pants pocket when I get out of the car.

When I was a young LEO, I carried a 4” Colt’s Official Police or (later in my career) a 2.5” S&W Model 66 on/off duty & NEVER felt “undergunned”.

These days, I carry a 16-shot “intermediate size” 9mm SA, loaded with 9x19mm 124 grain JHP Plus-P.

My old S&W “duty gun” is mounted on the wall in a shadow box with my “tin star”. - It won’t be fired again in my lifetime.
(My 1st cousin, Randy, carries my old Colt as his EDC.)

Yours, TMN78247

Reliability, mostly. In my experience the Ruger LCP is not reliable. Also I don't enjoy shooting it, which admittedly is a secondary issue for an EDC gun but I just have this thing about wanting to enjoy shooting firearms that I own when I go to the range. Plus, if I don't enjoy shooting it that means my wife CAN'T and WON'T shoot it and won't build proficiency with it and it's just a paperweight to her.

I assume the Kel-Tek P380 is the same because it is what Ruger copied (violated patent, yes) when they made the LCP.

OTOH I have tried a Glock model 42 at a range and while it worked well for me, it jammed when my wife tried it.

So my thinking is to heck with it, if I'm beginning to have trouble shooting my 642, which I am, I'm probably better off to acquire a... what's the model number, 521(?) at 11 ounces, with 7 rounds of .22wmr, than to mess around with something like an LCP, or a Glock model 42 which is not a good choice for my wife.

Enough gun to have in one's pocket ALL THE TIME in case of say, a fender bender with a violent temper person, when one isn't carrying a real weapon like an SP101 for example - which would be a better choice, but not always practical.

Another choice might be something in .32 H&R Magnum but I dunno... ammo's kinda pricey and not commonly available...

Yes, I have. Don't care for blowback operated handguns, period. Just give me a lightweight revolver to carry in my pocket ALL THE TIME - a .22 magnum will do, and either an SP101 or a steel J-Frame like a model 60 or 36 to carry... usually.

I've just never been able to settle on a 9mm or a .45 for that role, and that's another deal-stopper for me too, now that you mention it... no blowback-operated handguns, at least not in any centerfire caliber.

I am speaking from the standpoint, the average person would be much more likely face a carjacking or some crack addict sticking up a convenience store than a real SHTF situaion.

Although your point is valid, any gun is better than no gun in any situation....

Notice the flash beyond the muzzle next time you are at the range with your .357. Even a 6” barrel will have it, though less.

And go to the range when it’s dusk, sun going down.

From what I’ve read and been told, powder is still burning on a .357 after it leaves the muzzle. Unless it’s in a rifle!
