Since you appreciate fishing like I do, here's Beau with the Walleye he caught up near Green Bay, WI a few weeks back:

That last package has four fillets and all of the 'fish cheeks' which are like yummy bits of lobster. It was during the spawn so they were allowed two fish per man per day.

Yummm!!! Nice fish! I haven’t had walleye since my teens...

IL has stocked unusually large put and take trout in their trout ponds this spring, as I discovered when their State parks were reopened (May 1). My 1st outing there was a few days later: Bites were slow, but I ended up with 3 rainbows from 15” to 16-1/2”. Those were 3 of the 5 largest trout I’ve ever caught. By comparison, just across the river in KY, a 12” this spring is a “monster”. (Troubles at the fish farm / hatchery that KY is supplied by, evidently, but, even so, even in IL in the past, a 12” rainbow has been a darn nice fish.)

I have a couple 2020 fish tales to tell, already, but first I have a real garden question (my next post.)

My 1st gardening question this week is:

Does anybody have a guess as to why my tomato seedlings that I have started in small pots or other containers always seem to start off ok, shoot up a 2-4 inches but are very “spindly”, then fall over and die. I’ve tried varying light, and water to no successful effect. These are usually but not always started indoors, in April-early May to avoid frost worries. Volunteers out in the garden seem to do ok (if frost or cutworms don’t get ‘em) but their quality & flavor is hit and miss.

PH is ok (usually around 6.5), I’ve tried potting soil(s), bagged garden soils, and composted soil of my own.

My best guess is “too moist”, but that is tough because often I’m gone for 2-3 days, so sometimes I have to overwater them a bit so they don’t dry up B4 I return. (I have had that happen in the past, too.)

Never can I seem to get to healthy, slightly bushy plants 5-6” tall, like one sees in the “4 packs” or “6 packs” one can find @ Lowes and so on.

Anyone have any ideas?

My 1st funny fish story of 2020:

Maybe 1/2 hour and a 4-5” bluegill after arriving @ a local trout pond last Thursday, I got a “big” hit that broke my line, above the bobber. My hook set was not “big”, as I was expecting a 10” trout! The line must have somehow had a weak spot and it was still last fall’s line — Anyway, for the next hour “plus”, I was treated to watching my bobber go swimming & diving around the pond. This was particularly aggravating as I’d been using one of my “Rocket Bobbers”, which I really like, but are a bit pricey and hard to get since Wal-Mart no longer carries them. I try to only use them in “safe” circumstances - not around snags and such. At one point the fish apparently got tired and the bobber “rested” near enough to shore that I tried to snag it with my longer pole - no luck, of course - it just pulled free of my rod. Then the show swam over to the other side of the pond, where a young fellow fishing there started casting at it - oh, 25-30 ft. out, I’d say. I thought this was fairly hopeless, but, I’ll be darned if ~20 minutes later he successfully snagged the line and reeled in the trout & bobber, yelling over to me “do you want your fish?” Well, I wanted the bobber more & offered him the fish, but he didn’t want to clean just 1 fish: He wanted to trade me both bobber & fish just to know what bait I’d been using! I’d been using PowerBait trout dough balls, mostly, but a garden worm caught one trout.

Well, that was an obvious trade to make, so I got my bobber back plus the best fish of the evening (16-1/2” long). I’d better restring that reel, or at least test the remaining line, as “I’ll be back” as “Ahhhnold” would say.

Walleye is good stuff. Not many places near me where they can be caught consistently. I’m going to buy a dozen or so from the hatchery in the fall and toss them in my pond.
