An overview of the Art of Pompeii to the music of Alison Balsom playing Neruda's Trumpet Concerto in E Flat and Haydn's Trump Concerto in E Flat. A wide range of styles. Anyone else see surrealism and German expressionism?

This should be the last of the Pompeii art videos. Next is the fruit face Renaissance artist, Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

I needed an excuse to get out of the antique music, so that tourist painting at the beginning of the video gave me the excuse. Very soothing.

Great. Thanks for posting. I lived in Naples for two years and went to Pompeii about a half dozen times. Never got old.

    Thanks mairdie, amazing images.
And I’ve always had a soft spot for mosaics.

I’m blown away by how advanced this artistry is. Things that my art history teacher said would come centuries later, like perspective, shadow and modeling of the human form, and great realism are present in many of these works; while others had the flat decorative quality of the late 19th century.

It makes you wonder how much the later artists knew about the earlier artists. I don’t know when museums began collecting ancient art so that more modern artists could see it and make their own variants. It’s clear from bios and the earliest works of an artist that artists spent a great deal of time in museums copying the work of masters as part of their early education.

It would have been pretty hard to “collect” frescoes, you have to admit!

Not at all. That’s why there are so many holes in the walls in Pompeii. People just hacked them out and sold them. The best art from Pompeii - frescoes and mosaics - are in the Naples museum framed.

By the way, isn’t it a LOT more fun to make your own discoveries in art history by seeing bunches of things at once rather than hearing someone say something that doesn’t go down to your gut so you have to memorize it instead of just KNOWING it? I LOVE these! If ONLY I’d had them when I was studying art history!

Totally agree! Besides, our art history teacher was a lectch! Spent too much time looking at classical sculpture, no doubt. I’m grateful he didn’t fancy me.
