Huntsville, Ala., May 06, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- HUNTSVILLE, Ala., May 6, 2020 - Dynetics, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Leidos (LDOS), has been awarded Phase 1 of the Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program, Technical Area 3 (TA3), by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Strategic Technology Office (STO). ACE TA3, also known as Alpha Mosaic, is valued at $12.3 million.
The ACE program is using aerial dogfighting as the initial challenge scenario for implementing artificial intelligence (AI) into high-intensity air conflicts, which intends to increase warfighter trust in combat autonomy. Similar to how the United States military trains fighter pilots, ACE performers will work to increase trust in automated, within-visual-range, air-to-air dogfighting. As algorithms and tactics mature, so will the scenarios and adversarial capabilities.
During the 18-month Phase 1 award, Dynetics will leverage program advances in automated dogfighting to enable operational-level scenarios with a large number of heterogeneous aircraft. By improving the algorithms and tactics developed within ACE, TA3 will lay the groundwork for future live, campaign-level experimentation of manned and unmanned vehicles.

I don’t think AI will replace a combat pilot anytime soon. Probably not as long as I live (am 72, smile).
Probably not in the next 50 years. May be NEVER.
Oh, that ended discussion. Fighter pilots seldom ever see their advisary in today's world.
I just glanced at the headline and thought L. Ron Hubbard just got a government contract!?! ;-)
Gotta look closer!
Dynetics? Is the parent company Cyberdine Systems?

You’re not the only one, LOL!
I was going to say, at least it isn’t Cyberdyne.
What is interesting to think about that it has been true for awhile that fighter jets could be designed and made that could exceed the tolerance of human pilots -g-force etc. So one could almost say that having human pilots actually limit design parameters in some scenarios.
Good point. But I am looking at the much simpler task of building a self-driving car and that is a total joke. Although much of the public think it is really happening.

They are out there in some ares being tested. I never though they could be used with existing roads but they have made good progress there. Where I do see it happening is long distance trucking. Program the destination send them off, no bathroom stop, no food stop, no exhausted or worse hungover driver. In fact I think that is already being done.
Never teach machines the best way to kill humans. I will not end well.
As to dogfighting, a plane without a human inside can pull more G’s. I know, BVR missles, so what happens when you splash 8 killer drones, are Winchester and still have another 4 drones heading your way?
Like I said, don’t teach machines how to kill humans.
“Wonder weapons?” My God, I don’t see the wonder in them. Killing without heroics. Nothing is glorified? Nothing is reaffirmed? No heroes, no cowards, no troops, no generals. Only those who are left alive and those who are left... dead. Glad I won’t live to see it.” - General Patton
Great! How long before we give all the data to China?
Two weeks after the preliminary U.S. Air Force testing starts, the chicoms will demonstrate that their copy is fully operational...
Neither one will be functional soon.
AI is a bad joke.
Sure, you can monitor everything today. But the fixed data is so bad, the idea of dynamic data being correct via satellite is much less likely.
Out there, “being tested”.
Yep. But NOT functional. Won’t be soon. Many people think and say it is already there. It is NOT.
