An endangered whale shark was spotted in the Gulf of Mexico during a boating trip near Siesta Key, southeast Florida, earlier this week.

Alexa Groat and her family chartered a fishing boat on Tuesday to celebrate her sister's birthday, when an unexpected guest gatecrashed the party. The group had taken the boat out to the Gulf of Mexico where they spotted the shark (Rhincodon typus) cruising near the surface of the water.

I don’t think they are “endangered”.
No one hunts them and scuba divers see them all the time.
They might be uncommon off Florida Coast but not really in the Pacific.

“We would have jumped in to swim with the gentle creature but we were scared of what might be lurking under him,” she said to Click Orlando.

My favorite whale story — I may be mis-remebering this because I heard it a long time ago, but it sums up the environmental situation for me:

Once upon a time (they say) Sperm Wales were quite common. As many as 150,000 of the great beasts roamed the oceans. But then man starting hunting them for their oil and blubber. A great slaughter ensured and most of the Sperm Whales were killed. They were on the verge of extinction.

Then some researchers did a global survey to find the number of Sperm Whales still in existence. They counted 250,000 of the great beasts.

So the story became “Once upon a time Sperm Wales were quite common. As many as 500,000 of the great beasts roamed the oceans. But then man starting hunting them …”

They aren’t rare in the gulf. Very good friend of mine is a ship’s captain for an oil company and as he was cruising about 200 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico on a calm day and he spotted a commotion in the water a few hundred yards away. So he swings around to check it it out and it was about 50 whale sharks all breeding together. Whale orgy.

Whale sharks are filter feeders who eat plankton. Although any fish that weighs up to 20 tons can be dangerous just by virtue of its size.

Note to authors: BEFORE you start writing an article, do some research from documented/neutral sources, so that you do not appear to be a DUNCE, a FOOL & utterly IGNORANT of the subject that you are attempting to write about.

Whale Sharks are NOT endangered & never have been. = The Whale Shark has NO known natural enemies.

A whale shark is a shark

A blue whale is a whale

Blue whales are the largest mammals on the planet

A blue whale can weigh 300,000 pounds and be 100 feet long

The blue whales tongue alone is bigger than an elephant
