I always heard column shifters being referred to as “sticks” by people around me when I was young.

One car I remember being kind of unique was the Renault 16, since it had a four-speed shifter on the column.

I remember one of my dad’s friends test-driving a Mercedes 190D that had a four-speed on the column. I thought that was kinda weird.

Saab 96 also had a “4 on the tree” with an unusual “N’ pattern. Pull out , back, and up for reverse.
