worldometers.info gives the USA Total number of COVID-19 deaths as 69,492. This it the number that is repeated in the media. However the National Center for Health Statistics of the CDC gives the number as 38,576 on their website. LifeZette is reporting that this as an adjustment by the CDC. However, when I check with the Internet Archive Wayback Machine on archive.org, none of the screenshots from the previous dates that I checked show the higher numbers. E.g., the screenshot for April 27 at 05:36:31 shows only 27,674 deaths. Does anyone know what gives?
LIE that 70,000 people died FROM this virus....they might have died WITH this virus, but not FROM it!

Looking at the CDC site you linked to, it looks like they have 38,576 COVID-19 deaths, while over to the right they have another 17,122 people listed as “Deaths with Pneumonia and COVID-19”. Maybe they’re separating the two and worldometers is lumping all of them together?

Actually, I believe it’s more like $39,000 per Covid death.
Death is just another code. There are primary, secondary and tertiary codes. When an obese diabetic has a bad heart and can’t breath do you make the last straw (covid-19) the cause of death? Or the life of bad lifestyle choices?
The $39,000 is if they manage to get them on a vent before they died.
The left hand column [COVID-19 Deaths (U07.1)] is highlighted as bold. This would suggest that that this is the total number. It does not state that these are COVID-19 (U07.01) alone. The footnote states, “Deaths with confirmed or presumed COVID-19, coded to ICD–10 code U07.1.” My reading is that the column to which you refer [Deaths with Pneumonia and COVID-19 (J12.0-J18.9 and U07.1)] is an intersection of COVID-19 deaths and Pneumonia deaths, that the COVID-19 deaths here are included in the number in the first column. In any case, their total is still only 55,698 which is still less that 69,611 that Worldometer.info is reporting.
More than one totally unrelated death has been attributed to CCPVirus. There is a financial incentive to do so. An article above this one explains that someone tested positive four times counts as four infections and thus four deaths if he dies.

The fifth column shows those who have multiple codes—Deaths with Pneumonia and COVID-19 (J12.0-J18.9 and U07.1). This number could be in addition to the number listed in column 1, but seems more likely that this number is already including those listed in column 1.
Sounds to me like the CDC knows the number of Covid-19 deaths reported are being inflated, and thusly have adjusted them downward. That means you would not find any previous CDC reporting with higher numbers. Because they have been doing the adjustment all along.
Wikipedia shows 61,704 as of 5/3/20. I have noticed that the Wiki data is always less than what I hear reported.
AFAIK, the Wikipedia report is just a summary total of what is being reported at the state level. You can dig down and get the state data and at least in some cases you can find the county level info.
I like Wikipedia for this because they show all the day by day data they have for infections and deaths back to late February.

Note that I am not claiming that the 38,575 number is the correct one. But it is an official number from the CDC. From the archive.org screenshots it does seem that the report by LifeZette claiming that the CDC has changed the number is incorrect. It is possible that the CDC is posting too different sets of numbers. I am just trying to figure out what is going on.
