When Drew Layton dropped out of college in 2006 to play online poker full-time, it was a hard sell to his parents: They were not thrilled, he said.
But 14 years later, as coronavirus and the subsequent shelter-in-place orders have shut businesses around the globe and forced people to stay inside, some jobs have proven more stable than others. For Layton, online poker seems to be a good bet.
Layton said he had seen a marked increase in traffic to websites where he plays and thus a rise in his income. I wouldnt say Im thriving because of the pandemic, but one area of my life has gotten a little better, he said. All of a sudden, being self-employed is a huge benefit.

The only way to win to not play
some states it’s against the law to play online gaming sites for cash- I’m sure you have, but if you haven’t already- make sure you state isn’t one of them
Playing online poker for ones primary income makes just as much sense as pooping your way rich.
On my lunch hours when I was working, I played blackjack for fun. I finally gave it up after losing over $3 million.......That’s why I don’t go to casinos to even play slots....

In play money, I hope. Ive often wondered about those sites. If you lose your initial play money stake, you can always buy more play money for real money. 1,000,000 play money chips for $2.99, for example.
Its to the sites advantage for you to lose. Maybe youll buy more chips. So are they fixed, fixed so youll lose?
With the publicity of the WSOP after Moneymaker's win, a lot of the fish got good enough so that the margins for pros became really small. But now maybe the pros can get a livable edge... at least for a while.
I've never had to buy chips as they give you 15000 every so many hours of play. I got up to as much as 500k, but am now back to around 300k.
I've been trying my luck at PLO and not having much. Too many people betting pot too early with crappy hands and getting there on the river.
It's more like playing the lottery than playing poker, but it is a distraction.

Folks who bet it all early, then hope for a good turn or river are called bingo players. It fits!
I remember reading about a currency trader in London who started his day playing online poker and did very very well - he said his start aligned perfectly with the US and his early AM was when they were drunk and about to pass out - he cleaned up LOL
A buddy and I would hit the Indian Casino hold'em games late on weekends. We are both good players, but the guys drinking all night were easy marks. We'd get there no earlier than midnight.
Doyle Brunson would seem to make that a silly statement. For most people however it is surely true. Impulse control among these guys is pretty lacking. Mike Matusow is a prime example, he has showed the ability to make money in poker then lose it all on sports betting. There are many many people who regularly make money in poker, I am not one of them but used to enjoy the game.
Look at the streaming poker games from The Bike Club and you will see some cash player that do well and some even retire with money, most don't. The really big games are in Macao where all the high rollers now play. Triton poker is another high roller club.
Yea, just a computer game that you can stop and continue the next day or whatever.........
I hope there are a bunch of idiots trying to make a living this way. This man will takes their stimulus money and laugh all the way to the bank.
Its like the fools daytrading these days.
Utter fools.
Amusing story about a Royal Flush.
I was on a flight to Nevada that was canceled due to weather. I was most pissed off as were others as this was a free flight. I am not a big time gambler. I do gamble a bit for free flights. My wife is the gambler. Oddly she is about even. I spoke briefly with one of those in the waiting lounge for the cancelled flight. He was a pilot as I and thus had common conversation.
The next day Harrahs whom was the company made it it all correct. They flew us to Bull Head City as was correct. The also gave us many free benefits in the restaurants and bars of their casino due to the fact of our one day late arrival. Harrahs are the good guys, they really are in the extreme.
Harrahs made my wife and my visit to Bull Head very good. We have returned a couple of times. All the casinos are on the Colorado River. One can buy a day pass for just a few dollars. Then one can go from casino to casino via a very rapid speed boat. It is great fun.
I oddly much prefer Bull Head City to Las Vegas. When we take a free flight it is great. I am a geologist and lastly pharmacist. The wife person plays the games for a day or so and thus insures a new free flight in the future. She is a computer software engineer. As a geologist I just rent a car and drive around the basin and range of the Rocky Mountains. The last day wife and I just run out to Grand Canyon. Next time I will take her to Mohave instead of Grand Canyon. She has not seen Mohave.
Their casino at Lake Tahoe is most excellent also but they do not give freebie flights there unless one is an very avid gambler. Harrahs Las Vegas I do not care for. I just do not like Las Vegas and this has nothing to do with Harrahs.
The gambler, He was a chopper pilot from Vietnam and a retired major and commercial pilot ATPL and a real nice guy, he drew the Royal Flush. He was the gentleman that I had briefly spoken with the prior day.
I asked him if he was all in on the bet. He said yes. I asked him how much he won. He just said it “was considerable.” What a damn good day for an old chopper pilot that laid his ass on the line in Vietnam. He was an engineer. The table he was playing at was for those that could only bet considerable amounts of money.
The good guy won that day.
