NASCAR announced Thursday that it will resume its season without fans starting May 17 at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina with the premier Cup Series racing three more times in a 10-day span.

NASCAR joins the UFC as the first major sports organizations to announce specific return to play plans since the coronavirus pandemic shut down U.S. sports in mid-March.

“NASCAR and its teams are eager and excited to return to racing, and have great respect for the responsibility that comes with a return to competition,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. “NASCAR will return in an environment that will ensure the safety of our competitors, officials and all those in the local community.

You can bet they’ve been practicing, in secret, either alone or in small groups. Once they lose ‘muscle memory’, it won’t take too long to get it back. They’re pros.

Not all Cup races. But Cup has 4 races in 10 days! Wow, that’s a lot of work for the teams. That means 8 to 10 cars per driver ready before the 1st race.

why is sitting in a crowded stadium a bad idea?

The same reason holding the Liberty Loans parade in Philadelphia in September 1918 was a bad idea.

the virus is making relatively few people actually sick, fewer still needing any kind of medical help and fewer still who actually need to be in a hospital...

You are describing the conditions under current mitigation procedures and extrapolating them to a population without mitigation. Just because some places are reopening does not mean we should seek out large crowds for the sake of seeking out crowded events. That is how we get a second wave and more and longer lockdowns.

why is it only YOU have a choice and I don't

Ask yourself how much choice 63,856 Americans now have because people didn't take this seriously in the beginning.
