Viewers were left in stitches as a lion-tailed macaque repeatedly slapped a giant squirrel in a fight over an enormous jackfruit on last night's episode of BBC1's Primates.

The 'marvellous' moment happened during a segment about the macaques living in the Western Ghats mountain range in India.

It showed how lion-tailed macaques took advantage of the Malabar giant squirrel's sense of smell to locate ripe jackfruit and steal it from them.

Using a surprisingly simple technique, the macaque simply batted the squirrel repeatedly on the nose to keep it away from the food.

I hear ya! Having done a fair amount of traveling in East and southern Africa I’ve been lucky enough to see African wildlife in the wild. But I must say that his videos are,at their best, just as thrilling as actually being there.

The marsupial, native to India, is different from the squirrel we see in Europe by its impressive size and mesmerisizng (sic) colors. …
Oh brother. Squirrels, including this species of squirrel, are rodents (placental mammals), not marsupials.

10kg? Was it the size of a watermelon? If a flying squirrel can haul around a watermelon, I’m not messing with it.

In Europe they call squirrels tree rats.
So that would make the American squirrel just another rat with a good PR campaign.

Do you know how they filmed them?

The ones I mentioned were filmed within the last 5 to 7 years using HD and UHD cams and drones. Don't know about the ones before.

Well, they do have a problem with feral grey squirrels there, which is an American species.

They also have the dormouse, which looks to me to be actually a mouse-sized squirrel; it gets its name from its long periods of hibernation.
