This past week I have been re-watching Herman Wouk's masterpieces, "The Winds of War", and "War and Remembrance".
In my opinion two of the finest TV miniseries ever made and timeless.
I have always been fascinated with W.W. II history and consider that era in many ways the High Point of this countries history. An era that will never be again.
A time when all America came together to fight a war that had to be fought. I contrast that time to today when we make politics out of everything including today's Virus Crisis.
For those of you interested you can find both available on YouTube, no commercials.
Martin Gilbert has done excellent work for Churchill.
Agree, although I did like William Manchester’s three volume bio on him also.
I’ve found the traveling to and death camp scenes the most riveting of any other film. Very emotional.
if you haven’t already, do read the books. i worked for Little Brown in publicity at the time of their publications. Wouk is/was a master storyteller. they were giant bestsellers.
Concur strongly. The characters may be fiction but the intensity of the experiences are not. Incredible books and films.
I like similar books about places I have lived so I could better understand the local history as if it were a story. I loved Micnhers Centennial because it was the history of my family. Moving to Colorado 120 years ago. Highly recommend if you want to know Colorados history. When were in Panama we read Michners Caribbean about the pirates, the sacking of Panama City. On weekends we would go diving at Portobello and Drake Island. I spent a weekend sailing at Nombre de Dios. To read 400 year old history about those places and visit them was incredible. Both great books if you havent read them. The made a TV series Centennial.
“I find this a timely series to watch even now and with our current Virus Crisis. Please feel free to comment, at least something else to talk about instead of the coronavirus”
I read and then watched both “Winds of War and ‘War and Rememberence”. Both were excellent mini series. And Yes, that is when America was ALL TOGETHER in winning the Second World War.
The books are better.
Read both
Jane Seymour was much better. Byron was almost as annoying when he was Jan-Michael Vincent... I did think both actors for Aaron Jastrow were very good.
I also watched these a couple of weeks ago. Just timeless and fabulous storytelling.
The first “The Winds of War”, the best of the two. Riveting.
I love the books, read them several times. I also really like Hermann Wouk...
I had no idea anyone had made the books into video and now look forward to seeing them—thabk you :)
I loved the books and I keep a copy of each on hand in case I want to read them again. The films were good, too.
Without question, you are absolutely correct. Pug or Briney or Natalie are always preset at some critical and important event. The portrayal of bit player Franklin Roosevelt is especially interesting.
Both series are long because the war was both long and historically important
Centennial was excellent. I don’t know what happened to my copy. It got lost in a move.
Sacajawea was a 1500 page read that was also excellent. It was one you don’t want to put down. S
I read almost all of Michener’s books, and Wouk’s books, Shirer’s books, and Leon Uris’ books.
Several others, too.
IOW I discovered “historical fiction” and it turned me into an avid reader.
It provided a “twofer” of both dramatic plot, and factual history.
The books are better.Woulk's description of the Midway naval battle in War and Remembrance is absolutely riveting.
The Navy pilots flying the torpedo bombers knew they were making suicide runs but did it anyway. Their sacrifice allowed the dive bombers to have an unimpeded path to their targets.
They don't make 'em like that anymore.
I have and loved the two books!
