This discusses the platform dispute that led to the walk out of many of the southern delegates. The southern delegates wanted a stronger position on slavery in the territories, fugitive slaves, etc.
The convention and a separate convention of southern delegates reconvened in Baltimore. There were Democratic and Southern Democratic candidates. There was also a Constitutional Union Party, which did fairly well in the south, where Lincoln was not on the ballot.
Lincoln won all northern states and no southern or border states. Deep southern states seceded in response to his election and 4 other states seceded after Fort Sumter, Lincoln’s call for volunteers, etc.
