I saw that the MI legislature stripped Whitmer of the power to unilaterally declare a lockdown, extend it, decide what’s “non-essential,” etc. She’ll veto the bill, of course, but I think consideration should be given across the country to stripping governors of this unilateral power.
Make the governors appeal to the legislature, don’t permit it for more than two weeks, don’t permit them to keep on changing their deadlines, and don’t permit them to issue orders that violate Constitutional guarantees. Make them appeal to the legislature for any action, which would require them to present a case for it, give the people a say in it and keep the governors from using it for political grandstanding (in this case, Whitmer and Cuomo showing how much they hate Trump by opposing everything he says, even if it means dragging their states into bankruptcy and poverty).
