The Packers were widely expect heavily in pass catchers during the 2020 NFL Draft given the talent depth at the position and the need to support quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

But Green Bay caught many fans by surprise with its decision to take no wide receivers with its nine picks, leading to frustration. As the non-receiver announcements continued to roll in during Day 3 of the draft Saturday, the angst boiled over on social media.

The Steelers took a Canadian wide receiver.

He’d probably feel right at home in Green Bay.

“The Packers were widely expect heavily in pass catchers during...”

After reading that 4x, I still don’t know what it means.

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “Are you a pitcher or a catcher?”

Chill there. Belichick has avoided picking WRs high or at all for years—while the Superbowl victories rolled on.

Easier to identify and pick successful ones from within the league.

Good thing for the Packers that Aaron Rodgers doesn’t hold grudges...

Many journalists are terrible writers. Sports writers are REALLY terrible. Same with TV news. The anchors are stupid, but the sports reporters are REALLY stupid.

Their undrafted free agent guy playing a lot last year - Alan Lazard - seemed like a real talent. And Rogers was very high on him. So maybe they thought there were bigger needs.

This isn’t about not picking high. They didn’t pick AT ALL. And free agency was last month, they didn’t buy an receivers then either. Their receiving core is Bob From Accounting and a Bag of Pucks. And they did nothing about it. Thought regime change in Green Bay would be good for the team but so far the replacements do the same things their predecessors did only more so.

I'm not sure they went for a QB in the first round. Their backup QB, Tim Boyle, is a good QB. A WR is needed, but maybe they have one in the free market.

Tampa Bay is doing great this off-season. A new QB (some guy named Brady, I hope he's great), new WR and re-signing their free agents.

High OR at all.

That’s my point.

WR IIRC consistently comes in on average with the lowest Wonderlic scores of any football position. And the pro game is a lot more complex and mentally challenging than most college ball.

Not surprising IMO that it can work out better to wait and see how players do in actual NFL games before committing to them.

LSU fan here...y’all got a good one with Edwards-Helaire. (pronounced “el-air).
I watched him play his whole time at LSU. He’s from Baton Rouge; tough as nails but raised right. His thighs are like tree trunks! Lol
Watch his highlights on u-tube, especially against Alabama...Enjoy!!

The wonderlic means nothing. And again they didn’t get any in free agency either. They came into the off season with a serious lack of talent in the WR spot and did NOTHING to address it. So now they got the same lame guys as last year, only 1 year closer to retirement.

The wonderlic is a quick IQ test. Not likely as accurate as longer ones, but it is not coincidence that, say, quarterbacks and offensive linemen score higher than WRs. WR is about as elite speed athleticism position as there is in pro sports.

That’s my point. And the proof is in the pudding. Those WRs who can adjust are the most valuable. You are less likely to err in acquiring those who have already demonstrated that ability than those who haven’t. Because not every speedster in college can make that adjustment.
