If I include the link to NYT I must post the news as a reply instead of in the body of post field.

Charleston Convention – 2-3
Editorial: The Democracy at Charleston – 3

Let’s try it like this for a while. I found it doesn’t take too many screen prints to get a lot of news in the post. Anyway, the old ways are best. I’m curious to learn whether the NYT link on this thread works for you non-subscribers.

I have to admit the NY Times has an impressive system for their archives. The images I post come from screen shots I make of the Times Machine, which is able to show every issue they every published in pdf form that you can drag through. Some of the pages get a little hard to read, but all things considered it is a remarkable resource. From there you can go to their regular search engine and call up a link to any article you choose for any date. The articles are transcribed by machine, so sometimes an article can get scrambled. I’ll just be using that feature for the link.

The NYT of 1860 has 8 pages in the Mon.-Fri. editions. Saturday had either 8 or 8 plus a 4-page supplement. They don’t publish on Sunday and won’t until April of 1861. Apparently, something will happen then to make it necessary to violate the no-work-on-Sunday tradition. Maybe the Republicans in Congress will decide to impeach President Douglas for writing an imperfect letter to the Czar of Russia or something, and it will become a 24/7 news cycle.

I will throw in some ads and classifieds as well as non-Civil War related news to keep things interesting. The technical wizards haven’t yet figured out how to mass produce photos for newspapers and magazines. The Times doesn’t even have wood-cut reproductions of photos like Harper’s Weekly does.

I plan to continue posting excerpts and diary entries on the Harper’s threads. That makes multi-day conversations about the material easier to follow.

Happy reading.
