1862 - Union Flag Officer David G. Farraguts fleet sails into New Orleans, La., after long preparation and fierce battles while passing through the Confederate defenses of Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip the previous day.
I suggest you find the historical work that was done on Fort Jackson, which to my knoeledge, was left abandoned after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. I had visited the fort. It was a marvel of construction, and all the artifacts to include bolts fired from federal ships.
I thought, given your background, but you might be interested in this.
had occasion to visit Fort Jackson in the mid 80s, while stationed in New Orleans. It was interesting. Must have been one hell of a fight for those ships to sail past it.
The star construction of the fort, was steered with a point facing the bayous in the southwest. Therefore no field of fire into a section with enough draft for the federal gunboats to anchor and deliver their barrage without return!!
