THE DEADLY COSTS OF SHUTDOWNS
Powerline ^ | April 24,2020 | John Hinderaker

Heather Mac Donald has an excellent piece at American Greatness titled “The Deadly Costs of Extended Shutdown Orders.”

More than a dozen governors extended their economic shutdown orders recently into May and beyond. Those officials should have publicly addressed the following questions first:

* How many coronavirus deaths do you expect to avert by the shut-down extension?

* What will your state’s economy look like after another month of enforced stasis?

* How many workers will have lost their jobs?

* How many businesses will have closed for good?

* How many of your state’s young residents, seeking employment for the first time, will be unable to find it?

Instead, the announcements of the prolonged shutdown were representative of government decision-making during the coronavirus crisis: opaque, lacking in criteria for measuring success and failure, and bereft of any attempt to measure the benefits of mitigating one particular health problem against the costs—including other health problems.

The focus on saving “just one life” from the coronavirus, as Cuomo put it in March, to the exclusion of all other considerations likely will prove a catastrophic failure of policymaking. The devastation to individuals’ ability to flourish or even survive may soon become irreversible. Every scientific model used to justify these economic death sentences has been discredited.

But even if those models were proven reliable, government decision-making must turn toward opening up. Officials must be made to justify, through a transparent analysis of costs and benefits, all further mandates to prevent people from working. Otherwise, there may be nothing recognizable as our economy to return to, with a resulting cost in human life and well-being that will match anything the coronavirus could inflict.

agree on all and every 1% increase in unemployment results in thousands more committing suicide. ( medical journal Lancet). I can tell you that suicide intervention centers are getting more calls in 72 hours than we usually see in 3 months. For a concise analysis see the following excerpt below that estimates an increase from suicide and drugs of 70,000 this is from https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2020/04/13/shutdown_could_kill_more_americans_than_covid-19_142934.html

No model or guesswork is required to foresee the deadly impact. Job losses cause extreme suffering. Every 1% hike in the unemployment rate will likely produce a 3.3% increase in drug overdose deaths and a 0.99% increase in suicides according to data provided by the National Bureau of Economic Research and the medical journal Lancet. These are facts based on experience, not models. If unemployment hits 32%, some 77,000 Americans are likely to die from suicide and drug overdoses as a result of layoffs. Scientists call these fatalities deaths of despair.
Then add the predictable deaths from alcohol abuse caused by unemployment. Health economist Michael French from the University of Miami and a co-author found a “significant association between job loss” and binge drinking and alcoholism.

The impact of layoffs goes beyond suicide, drug overdosing and drinking. Overall, the death rate for an unemployed person is 63% higher than for someone with a job, according to findings in Social Science & Medicine.

It’s a fraud. Open your business and go back to work. If they ticket you demand a jury trial. What jury would convict on the BS they are using to destroy America.
Yea, I know the gov has deep pockets. But what do you have to loose? If you own your own business you will be out of business before too long if not already.
Screw these thugocrats that are destroying our economy.

Well, I’m sure enough head-firmly-in-the-trough career politicians and other elitist FYIGM types offering their ‘thoughts and prayers’ will just make it all go away. That, and of course, getting Orange Man Bad out of office, because Orange Man Bad!

I sure hope there is no bail out money for New York. They have shodily managed for 200 years their money and I don’t think the other states or citiens should have to shore them up. Start firing people, starting with the Mayor.

They’re playing with fire. Lightly concerned about devastating the economy. And expecting its magical return.

Or expecting we will all climb out of our shelters, look around at a barren lunar landscape littered with destroyed businesses and masses of unemployed, and we will all say, “Ain’t it grand, Ma! The virus wind stopped blowing!”

Societal breakdown at the minimum will destroy the country as founded and will kill millions one way or another. it’s vastly documented. What comes from the ashes is actually much worse if the left has its way.

The Rats are more than happy to pass the cost of the shutdown to future generations — Hell, the scumbags glorify the killing of babies.

“....No model or guesswork is required to foresee the deadly impact....”

Thank you for posting these important facts! Those of us who deal in reality understand the consequences of what is happening. We’ve been sold the biggest bottle of snake-oil that ever existed. You know what? It’s only going to get worse. Everyone knows the reason that all of us are alive today is very simple. We shut down the largest economy in the world. That saved our once great country! I’m not sure I fully blame Trump, but he has played his part in this hoax.

Only time will tell if we make it out of this debacle — and not much time, either.
