The mayor of Japan's Osaka has come under fire for suggesting men should do grocery shopping during the coronavirus outbreak because women are indecisive and "take a long time".
Japan is under a state of emergency over the pandemic, and residents in some areas have been asked to shop less frequently and only send one family member out to get supplies to limit contact.
Osaka Mayor Ichiro Matsui told reporters on Thursday (Apr 23) that men should be entrusted with grocery runs because women "take a long time as they browse around and hesitate about this and that", Kyodo news agency reported.
"Men can snap up things they are told (to buy) and go, so I think it's good that they go shopping, avoiding human contact," the 56-year-old added.
When challenged by a reporter, he acknowledged his remarks might be viewed as out-of-touch, but said they were true in his family.
But online he was roundly condemned, with one Twitter user accusing him of being "disrespectful to women and men".
Another dubbed his comment "full of prejudice against women", adding "there are indecisive men and nimble and sharp women".

I’m the organized one. My husband likes to meander, while I hate to shop. I write a list, plot a course through my store, and then GTFO.
Oh, Japan. You love your stereotypes.
My church held a men’s retreat 40 years ago where Gary Smalley was the speaker. Gary was explaining the differences between men and women when he pointed out: men go shopping while women go shooooopping.
Wait ‘til you hear his opinion of women drivers. ;-D
Every rule has exceptions. That said, he did quote the rule correctly.
It’s a funny remark. I have no idea if it’s universally true, but it rings true in my family. Try laughing sometimes. Not everything is life and death.
Its true in my family too. 😁
can’t tell the truth about women.
or how long it takes them to get ready for anything and everything.
the stereotype is an accurate one at the group level.
the few exceptipns prove the stereotype is not based on lies but truths.
Western media: “Lies, whatever, Whatever makes us the most advertising income we’ll trumpet.”
Tough time to be taking Tacrolimus?

I’ll be damned...Japan is full of Karens, as well.
A few months ago, I was in a store. A woman who was probably over 80 years of age was pushing a loaded cart through an aisle. She said, “Watch out! Woman driver!” ;D
I really miss some of the people of her generation.
Stereotypes become stereotypes for a reason. Women tend to meander. Men tend to be task oriented. I am a non-stereotypical like you. My wife is task oriented and I tend to meander. Nothing wrong with either method. She gets it done quicker and I get better deals and come up with better ingredients.
Women should get the damned chips of their shoulders. (Stereotype, I know)

It is nearly laughable what passes for journalism and politics these days, if it werent so sad. There are over 20M people in Osaka. Im sure you could write a story about nearly anything using the example of 2 unnamed Twitter users (out of approximately 330M active users) who took umbrage at one thing or another. So tired of this lazy journalism and using poll results to make news. Please...
I guess there are some truths which cannot be spoken—even in Japanese.
this guy has never been out with my hubs to buy light bulbs.
