The commandant of the Marine Corps has banned the public display of the Confederate battle flag, a symbol that he said had the “power to inflame” division.

“But somehow, these childish people today feel they have license to be more Angry than the men who were actually there in the battle.”

A big part of it is modern “conservatives” have been so intimidated by post-modern pop culture that they are afraid to stand for anything that could get them called “racist” - which is anything.

If we cannot somehow turn this around, we will soon see “conservatives” on this site calling to take down the Washington and Jefferson monuments because they were “racists.” Senator Romney is probably ready to support that action right now; as is the commandant.

This guy sure has his priorities straight:

“New commandant considering 1 year leave of absence for moms and changes to evaluating and promoting Marines”

I’ve got one just like the one you show in the picture.
Mine has a small amount of dirt or mud on it, it’s OK.
It was carried at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Taking down the USA flag is the objective of many foreign and domestic enemies. We the people need to elect representatives, senators and local leaders who will prosecute the efforts to bring this country under another form of government.

Interesting how the Eureka Flag of the one hour Eureka rebellion in Australia is still held in honor.

Same for the memory of Louis Riel of the Metis Rebellion in Canada. Parades, statues, ceremonies still honor his memory even though he was tried and hanged for treason and murder.

But the Confederate battle flag? Pearl clutching time! Wonder what they would do if you displayed the Cherokee Confederate flag or the Choctaw Confederate flag as these tribes in Oklahoma all joined the Confederacy and used their own flag designs.

You probably don’t want to know my view on naming US military bases or ships after people who waged war on the United States.

you should give it up when it comes to Confederate veterans, because they were pardoned and rehabilitated, with the Veterans Administration charged with honoring them as "US Soldiers" in the 20th century. The ravings of modern racialists of any ethnicity are no reason to destroy our history with Talibanesque revisionism.

CAN’T SEE WHY ANY US GOVERNMENTAL AGANCY WOULD LET THE FLAGS fly in public. The flag is of revolutionists.

I am from southern WV. Love southern culture. Spent a lot of time in the carolinas and georgia and lived in Fla.

Never felt the need to fly a confederate symbol.

You lost; get over it.

I will simply observe that the naming conventions of the past beat the h@ll out of what goes on today. They've already tacked John McCain's name onto the ship named after his father & grandfather, and it probably won't be too long before Fort Gordon is renamed "Fort Ted Kennedy", and we get a carrier named after B.J. Clinton...

Or maybe comsider not banning anything in the first place unless you want to go down the tyrant road.

It's the Marine Corps.

Plenty of things are banned.

In fact most high ranking confederate’s were pardon for their actions, which were clearly treasonous.

Lost Causers have a habit of confusing forgiveness with vindication.

Louis Riel Day is a holiday in Manitoba.

If you really want something like that here, we could have John Brown Day or Nat Turner Day.

“The flag is of revolutionists.”

The United States is a nation of “revolution.” The states won their freedom in what is called the Revolutionary War.

I mention this in case you forgot.

What you would expect someone who was born in 1890 when Civil War revisionism was getting started and who died in 1970 when it was starting to fall apart. What you would expect from someone who went to the Academy that Lee went to and later headed, and what you would expect from someone who lived at a time when the North-South divide was the greatest rift in the country. Things have changed since then and someone with the same values and policy imperatives as Eisenhower might view things differently today.

Funny thing is, nobody knows what a real Confederate flag looks like.

Bingo! Seems like the 'Political Correctness nazis' know less about our history than an average 1st grader...

Don’t forget the Irish Brigade that supported the Confederacy.

Harvard has Memorial Hall. In it they have inscribed all of their alumni who fought for the northern aggressors. Not one alumnus who followed their family and their conscience is honored by Harvard.

Those SOBs took 7 million dollars intended for small businesses and refused to give it back. Damn - they get that much every year from their alumni. After Trump called them out on it they decided to return the un-earned money. LOL

“with the Veterans Administration charged with honoring them as “US Soldiers”

Not quite. the VA is charged with treating them the “same as” veterans of the United States Armed Forces, not “as veterans” of the United States Armed Services.

I would expect him to tell the truth.

You can thank the blue-state ilk for the U.S.N.S. Harvey Milk. I am sure the commandant approves too.
